WINAIR: Any vivid memory?
JM: Upon my first participation in March 2017, I was
enchanted to see professional athletes amongst a mix of
mere aficionados. Iron Man competitors, former Olympic
medallists… That year, Ashley Whitney, a former US swimmer
of the 4x200 at the Olympics (she won a medal in Atlanta in
1996), finished first with a time of 55’28” across the channel.
Besides the competition, what won me over was that we had
kept a few days free, before and after the race, in order to visit
both islands – I fell in love with Nevis, in particular.

WINAIR: How is the 2020 edition looking up on your end?
What do you seek to achieve, during that race and beyond?
JM: As I write these words, I do not know whether I will be
able to attend the 2020 edition due to an issue with my right
shoulder; I’ve had to stop training in order to heal, but I remain
optimistic.
My ultimate dream, in this field, is the Samsung Bosphorus
hosted by the Turkish Olympic Committee on a distance of
4.16 miles across the Bosphorus. It takes place in July and
slots are hard to come by; registration typically closes less
than two hours after opening.
I love swimming and I love the ocean – and it seems like a good
reason for travelling, to me. The calendar of open swimming
competitions is very busy and goes all around the world! In my
opinion, it is a good and pleasant way of spending a vacation.

WINAIR : Un souvenir marquant ?
JM : Lors de ma première participation en mars 2017,
mon plaisir fut de découvrir la présence d'athlètes de haut
niveau parmi un brassage de simples aficionados. Des
coureurs d’Iron Man, d’anciens champions olympiques…
Cette année là, Ashley Whitney, ex-nageuse étasunienne
du 4X200 olympique (médaillée à Atlanta en 1996), arriva
la première avec un temps de 55:28 pour la traversée.
En marge de la compétition, qui m’a séduit, nous nous
étions réservé quelques jours avant et après pour visiter
les deux îles – et je suis tombé amoureux de Nevis, en
particulier.
WINAIR : Comment s’annonce l’édition 2020, de ton
côté ? Quels objectifs te fixes-tu, pour la course et audelà
?
JM : Au moment ou j'écris ces mots, je ne sais pas si
je pourrai participer à l'évènement de 2020 à cause d'un
souci à l'épaule droite ; j'ai arrêté les entraînements pour
me soigner, mais reste confiant.
Mon rêve ultime dans le domaine, c'est le Samsung
Bosphorus organisé par le comité olympique turc sur une
distance de 6kms700 au travers du Bosphore. Cela se
déroule au mois de juillet et les places sont chères ; les
inscriptions se bouclent en moins de deux heures après
l'ouverture.
J'adore nager et j'adore la mer – et cela me semble un beau
prétexte pour voyager. Le calendrier des compétitions
de nage en eaux libres est bien rempli et parcourt la
planète ! Cela me semble une agréable façon de passer
des vacances.
