From October 23 to 26, 2019, Guadeloupe hosted an international conference aimed at mitigating the recurring sargassum seaweed invasion across the Greater Caribbean; a model of global environmental advocacy. Since 2011, the repeated surge of invasive sargassum mats along the shorelines of the Greater Caribbean, from the Lesser Antilles to the US and Latin America’s Atlantic coasts, from Brazil to the Gulf of Mexico all the way to West Africa, represents a growing economic and sanitary hazard for all the affected populations. This shared realisation led to the organisation, last October on Guadeloupean soil, of a world-class conference with remarkable strategic implications for all the interested islands and territories, who have thereby claimed their “shared eco-responsibility” and willingness to meet this vast collective challenge coupled with a huge task at hand: the need to cooperate in order to find the actual causes of this proliferation of brown algae in highly touristic areas, with the help of international partners, scientists and researchers; the need to coordinate potential joint solutions to ensure the survival of the impacted economies as well as the protection of public health; the willingness to embrace a global approach to territories with distinct levels of development, sizes, and histories of cooperation with the French West Indies; the necessity to identify areas of growth and action to engage the existing human and financial resources. 2 Depuis 2011, le récurrent déferlement côtier d’invasifs radeaux d’algues sargasses sur la Grande Caraïbe, des Antilles aux littoraux de la côte atlantique des États-Unis et de l’Amérique latine, du Brésil au Golfe du Mexique et même jusqu’en Afrique de l’Ouest, signe une menace économique et sanitaire d’ampleur grandissante, pour toutes les populations concernées. Au point de conduire à l’organisation, depuis le territoire guadeloupéen en octobre dernier, de cette grande conférence mondiale aux implications stratégiques exemplaires pour toutes les îles et territoires concernés, se déclarant « tous éco-responsables » et prêts à relever ce vaste défi collectif doublé d’un immense chantier : la nécessité de coopérer pour diagnostiquer les causes réelles de cette prolifération d’algues brunes dans des zones de forte fréquentation touristique, avec le concours des partenaires-chercheurs de la communauté scientifique internationale mobilisés ; l’obligation de coordonner les pistes de solutions communes pour assurer la survie des économies impactées comme la protection sanitaire des populations concernées ; la volonté d’assurer une approche globale des territoires marqués par l’hétérogénéité de leur développement, de leur taille et de leur histoire de coopération avec les collectivités des Antilles françaises ; la nécessité d’identifier les axes de développement et les niveaux d’intervention aptes à mobiliser les moyens humains et les soutiens financiers disponibles. 2.
