FROM THE COCKPIT / LE MOT DU PILOTE
TC: How did you staff react during this period?
BM: As I often like to say, our staff is our major asset. The level
of commitment and involvement on the island is a force
that allows us to deal with this sort of challenge, as was the
case after hurricane Irma.
TC: Is an airline like Saint Barth Commuter a necessity for
the autonomy of Saint Barthélemy in terms of food and
healthcare?
BM: It is clear, that from the moment you live on an island,
all means of access, be it by plane or by boat, contribute to
its autonomy.
TC: Wasn’t the company originally created from the desire
to have locally that technology and savoir faire, keys to
opening up the island?
BM: Absolutely, that was in fact the leitmotiv especially after
the company, Air Saint-Barth, went out of business, but
there was more! There was a market, a request from clients
arriving by private jet at Juliana—because the runway in St
Barth is too short—who had the need to be transferred to
our island. Add to that our passion for aviation. And finally,
creating a company was a challenge we wanted to take
on.
TC: Is Saint Barth Commuter, like it was when it started
26 years ago, still a company with family values and what
are they?
BM: Absolutely and I have noted that is often a point in the
letters of applications we get from candidates. The human
dimension, the accessibility of management, the involvement,
the solidarity, and this desire to always improve, are
for me the pillars of our company.
TC: You are a pilot as well as the director of the company,
and you work with your father and your sister. How do you
share the roles and duties amongst yourselves?
A cela
BM: My sister Stéphanie supervises all the running of the business and its regulatory
compliance. She is also in charge of the security management system (SGS),
which has become an essential element in the good operation of an airline. It’s a
heavy responsibility she carries out with brio.
After founding and run the company for over 20 years, my father handed me the
reins in January 2017. He is obviously still very present and shares his advice with
us, based on the significant experience he has in air transportation and in management
in general.
The management of the company is very hands-on: I fly less than I did before
but I am there as a “joker” when the schedule gets stuck. As for as instructor and
examiner, I remain involved in the basic training of pilots as well as their ongoing
proficiency checks.
TC: How do you see St Barth Commuter evolve in the years to come?
BM: Our societal and environmental responsibility is a major issue for us. We have
always felt that was important, notably in terms of training young people. I am
especially proud to have helped some of them get that first foot in the stirrups.
In addition, since last October, in spite of the current situation, we have had two
mechanics coming in one at a time, in parallel to their academic training, to create
a practical experience in the fascinating universe of aeronautical maintenance
As far as sustainable development is concerned, we are attentively following the
evolution of this field; electrification of aircraft is starting to happen. And as it happens,
the Cessna Caravan, the plane we fly, is being used as a research and deve-
