An artistic Soul:
FABIENNE MIOT
UNE ARTISTE : FABIENNE MIOT
not remember the names of all my clients but I
remember the size of their fingers,” confides Fabienne
“Imay
Miot in her atelier, which can be seen behind the counter
in the back of her boutique. “I work here with my colleague
Jean, just the two of us. We complement each other very well:
we know who is going to do what without even asking.” This
space for artistic creation allows Miot’s regular clients to visit
a traditional workshop, and watch her at her bench, using a
bench pin, welding torch, files, and casting equipment, employing
the tools and savoir-faire of a bygone era…
A long line of jewelers
A watchmaker and a jeweler: Fabienne’s parents were
pioneers when they opened the first jewelry store in Saint
Barthélemy in 1975. A few years later, in 1978, their daughter
was all but 15 years old when she asked them to teach
her the basics of their trade, which very quickly became her
passion, and led her to follow in the footsteps of a family tradition.
“We have been in this field for seven generations,” says
Fabienne, adding that “her daughter has been working with
her for some time. It’s nice to be able to work as a family.”
In 1985, Fabienne took over her parents’ atelier, before opening
her own store in the center of Gustavia a few years later.
She has a faithful clientele, both local and international, that
she has continued to nourish and develop since her parents
started 45 years ago.
From signature designs to custom-made pieces
“In Saint Barth, people dare to wear their jewels, to be seen
with them. No need to put them in the safe: that is one of
the advantages of our island,” says Miot. Her line of jewelry
has endured from decade to decade by offering certain
classics, such as “maps” of Saint Barth, cutouts of the island
in various styles, most recently the “mini” format, a collection
the designer is currently working on. “I have been making
these maps for 40 years… Yet, as an artist, I might go in many
different directions, and my head swimming with ideas, follow
different paths… I create both the kind of jewelry that
sells in Saint Barthélemy, which brings us together, unites us,
and unique pieces, made to order.”
Fabienne Miot stresses the importance of personal relationships
at the heart of her business. “The boutique depends
on the quality of its service, its attentiveness, and
human touch: for me that’s what it’s about, Saint Barth. I like
to very closely analyze the person that is going to wear one
of my designs. I have even sought out specific stones for
clients who didn’t ask me to, but I was convinced (and rightly
so) that they were right for them: because the stones have
their own energy, and my custom design work also takes
that aspect of design into consideration.”
“J
