A LA UNE
August 1983. Pati was not quite 25 when she first washed
up on the shores of Saint Barthélemy, an epilogue to
three years of globetrotting. Charmed by the simplicity
of the island’s lifestyle, she settled in and made a living selling
her paintings and silkscreen t-shirts. St Barth French West Indies
eventually launched in 1989 and became a universal symbol for
the island. Still flying the flag of Ouanalao in the midst of foreign
invaders, the brand remains true to its roots, continually reinventing
itself with contemporary flair thanks to the diligence of
Pati herself. In spite of a solid business model, she still dreams
of simplicity, art, and respect for the environment.
Artisanal savoir-faire, ethics, and quality form the foundations
for Pati de St Barth, as illustrated by their use of pima cotton
known as the “cashmere” of the Peruvian Andes. Pati and her
husband make a special point of meeting the local artisans to
confirm proper working conditions. Today, the brand aspires to
move up a notch in terms of quality, at the expense of quantity,
by continuing to produce close to the source and always more
responsibly.
Room For Artists
A few years ago, Pati picked up her brushes anew and began
creating capsule collections of silkscreen t-shirts featuring her
watercolors, and creating an unbreakable link between her art
and her brand. She also provides space at her shop in St Jean
for Pati’s Gallery, a place where local artists can show their work
through the association, Artists of St Barth. Another way in which
Pati demonstrates her commitment to the development of an
active art scene on the island.
Artists of St Barth, plusieurs artistes locaux ou amoureux
courant artistique local.
