RESTAURANT
Saturday evening, nigh on 6pm. In front of the coral reef
that stretches beyond the airport runway, alert on
his board to catch the last waves at twilight, a surfer
makes out the vibrant rhythms of a DJ in the air, mixing with
the aroma of grilled fish. With a recipe for fun, dancing, and
Creole specialties, Lil’ Rock embraces a weekend of festivities,
under the blaring sun of Ouanalao. Coiffed by the flights of
airplanes, and nestled between Pearl Beach and Eden Rock,
Saint Barth’s recently established, Caribbean-chic concept
celebrates its second anniversary in March, its feet in the
sand, its barmen coming right to your table, bearing ultrafresh
lobsters, the best seller at this trendy bar-restaurant.
MOUNTAIN OF SUCCESS
LIL’ ROCK, DÉJÀ MONTAGNE
All Senses Aroused
A Caribbean chef has made this popular crustacean his specialty,
grilled or served with pasta. He also excels at transforming
local fish—wahoo to mahi-mahi— into tartare and colombo.
Creole cuisine updated with an international accent,
from grilled meat to vegan options. And there must always
be room for a scoop of delicious homemade ice cream.
As a destination, Lil’ Rock is firmly on the map, even though
it’s one of the newcomers on the island. Symbolically rising
from the sea in 2017, the restaurant was born as a simple
pop-up designed “to add a little ambiance after hurricane
Irma,” explains Pascal.
Created by Pascal Aubin and his younger brother Olivier,
this new gateway to paradise opened in 2019 on the beach
in St Jean: Lil’ Rock, named for the rocky island where it
was born.
A one-of-a-kind place in Saint Barthélemy, Lil’ Rock already
has a boulder-sized reputation for its competitive prices and
diversity of diversions. Art exhibits and live music entice a
varied clientele, a colorful mosaic based here and afar,
neighbors during the fleeting moment of a weekday lunch
or a festive cocktail over the weekend, with a perpetual eye
on the waves.
