Ogni imperatore romano era molto attento al potere delle immagini e quindi a illustrare attraverso i media che aveva a disposizione, dai monumenti alle monete, la sua politica e le sue gesta. All’inizio del suo regno Nerone proclamò Augusto come suo modello di governo e approfittò della lunga guerra contro i Parti (54-63 d.C.) per comunicare l’idea che, come in età augustea, la vittoria sul grande nemico orientale avrebbe dato inizio a una nuova età dell’oro. La guerra, che si combatté per il controllo dell’Armenia, ebbe fasi alterne e si concluse con un compromesso, quando Nerone incoronò re d’Armenia il principe partico Tiridate a Roma nel 66 d.C. La vittoria partica fu ampiamente celebrata da Nerone e anche con “rilievi storici”, come si vede nella lastra raffigurante un guerriero partico impegnato in un combattimento reso in uno stile molto drammatico. Essa potrebbe forse appartenere all’arco onorario che il Senato fece erigere sul Campidoglio in onore di Nerone (58-62 d.C.). L’arco non si è conservato, ma un’immagine monetale permette di ricostruirne l’aspetto: era sormontato da una quadriga guidata dall’imperatore e la decorazione figurata era estesa per la prima volta a tutto l’edificio. At the beginning of his reign, Nero announced that Augustus was his model for government, and he took advantage of the long war against the Parthians (AD 54 – 63) to communicate the idea that, as in the Augustan period, victory over Rome’s great eastern enemy would start a new golden age. The war, fought for control of Armenia, had its ups and downs, and ended with a compromise. Nero crowned the Parthian prince Tiridates king of Armenia at Rome in AD 66. Nero celebrated this Parthian victory widely, even in ‘historical reliefs’ such as the slab depicting a Parthian warrior in combat which is rendered in a very dramatic style. This may have been part of the honorary arch that the Senate had built on the Capitoline Hill to honour Nero (AD 58–62). The arch does not survive, but an image on a coin allows us to reconstruct its appearance. It was surmounted by a chariot driven by the emperor himself, and, for the first time, figured decoration covered the entire surface of the structure. 33 CRIPTOPORTICO NERONIANO
