Il video proiettato nel corridoio annesso al
Criptoportico illustra i tre ambienti – purtroppo
non visitabili per motivi di sicurezza - che si
trovano immediatamente all’interno e che sono
quasi certamente riferibili a un nucleo del primo
palazzo neroniano, la Domus Transitoria. Coperti
a volta, i vani erano disposti in modo da creare
quasi un terrazzo artificiale su questo versante
del colle. Gli scavi ne hanno riportato in vista i
ricchissimi rivestimenti marmorei delle pareti e delle
volte, ancora in parte in situ. Particolarmente ben
conservato è il fregio a mosaico, articolato in edicole:
con tholos e pantera, e con catino e conchiglia.
Anche i pavimenti erano in opus sectile.
Assai stretto il confronto del ninfeo della Domus
Transitoria (sotto la Domus Flavia) con questo
nucleo, al quale infatti si accede attraverso una scala
di gradini di marmo.
La tipologia delle strutture, le tracce di incendio, la
profusione dei marmi, l’estensione delle superfici
a mosaico inducono ad attribuire a Nerone questo
settore del Palazzo inglobato nella Domus Tiberiana.

The video projected in the corridor next to
the Cryptoporticus depicts three rooms that
unfortunately cannot be visited for safety reasons.
These rooms lie within the bounds of Nero’s first
palace, the Domus Transitoria, and almost certainly
form part of its core. The vaulted rooms were
arranged to create a sort of artificial terrace on this
side of the hill. The excavations have brought to light
fine marble revetments from the walls and the vaults
that remain partly in situ. A mosaic frieze arranged in
articulated niches, containing tholos and panther, and
basin and shell motifs, is particularly well preserved.
The floors were paved in opus sectile. There are
close similarities between this nucleus of rooms and
the nymphaeum of the Domus Transitoria (beneath
the Flavian Domus), which can be reached by a
marble staircase. The architectural style of these
structures, the traces of fire damage, the profusion
of marble, and the extensive use of mosaic on its
surfaces all make it possible for us to attribute to
Nero this part of the Palace, embedded within the
Domus Tiberiana.
