NERO CLAUDIUS CAESAR
AUGUSTUS GERMANICUS
state distrutte dall’incendio?
I have returned to my home, the Domus Aurea.
Here, where Vespasian has constructed an
amphitheatre, a commonplace building like dozens
of others spread throughout the Empire, there was
once the lake that formed part of my residence. This
residence was a unique architectural creation, which
I did not have time to finish.
I also built, or completed, I don’t remember
which, an amphitheatre in the centre of Rome.
But I didn’t enjoy cruel spectacles, gladiators and
wild beasts. I was a man of high culture, and I
attempted to spread that culture to every section of
the population. I even opened specialised schools of
singing, music and oration. I loved Greece, Naples
and the whole of Campania, the land where Greek
culture endures, bathed by the sea in which I loved
to swim, free from the weighty business of court.
I was young when I died, not yet 32, and in my brief
life I was subjected to insults and accusations of
every type. I endured these with infinite patience. I
was accused of setting fire to Rome. But how could
I have set fire to my own home, the dwelling-places
of my ancestors, that were destroyed by the fire? I
was accused of having expropriated Rome to build
my Domus Aurea, an unfinished architectural
masterwork. But most of the land was my own
property! My successors have destroyed all of my
achievements and now almost nothing remains, only
what you will see in this exhibition that, for the first
time, will lead you through the places relating
