According to the chair man of Ania sa, Ro - ber to Luc chi ni, “the com pany car is still pe - nalised by a legislation that has no equal in the rest of Europe. This inequality has the direct effect of making Italian firms less competitive than their European competitors who have lower costs to pay (transport costs make up 6-8% of the total company costs) for a considerable good such as the company fleet”. Lucchini was speaking at a conference organised on 10th November by Aniasa, the association which represents short and long term rental firms. The heavy taxation of the company car in Italy is a problem which has been dragging on for ages now and, as it should be plain for all, has created a large gap between Italy and the other European countries. Not only has this stopped company cars becoming more popular, it also affects the adoption of more advanced ways of running a company fleet, like long term rental. It is true that this system is becoming more popular in Italy too, but the proportion of rented company fleets is still low in comparison with other European companies. This is a problem not only for the rental firms but for all Italian companies, because it is a fact that a rented company fleet costs much less than company-owned cars. Anyone who still needs to be convinced can look at the figures for the operating costs of companyowned cars in the Osserva torio feature and compare the annual cost for the mileage considered with the rental plans offered by the main rental firms. We are going through difficult times but nevertheless, thanks to our rental offers and our consultancy, we can still manage to offer our clients great opportunities for saving. This also makes a contribution to supporting the economy in Italy, where the crisis needs to be faced constructively and with much optimism and a sense of responsibility. Indeed, this is the attitude of not just the rental sector but the entire car sector, and some favourable signs are also coming from the market. “We are now receiving positive signals from people who put off their decision to purchase vehicles and are now thinking that the climate is right to start buying again,” says Fabrizio Longo, car sales director of the BMW Group Italy, in the interview you'll find in this issue of CarFleet. While the market is slowly getting back on its feet, car manufacturers are still striving to offer products which are innovative and at the Editorial Rental and taxation: the challenge goes on same time more environmentally friendly. “Honda's plans for development proceed with an increase in the offer of hybrid vehicles,” says the managing director of Honda Italy, Alessandro Skerl, interviewed here. As we know, the hybrid vehicle has low environmental impact, but the industry is also looking towards the zero emission objective with the electric car, the focus of a feature in this issue. The commitment of the car sector towards increasingly sustainable mobility does not however just concern the environment. Safety is also still a priority, as may be seen if we consider the prospect of cars being fitted with a 'black box', as commented by our writer Luigi Gemma in this issue. Long term rental firms are also constantly committed to improving safety and fighting pollution. Rental is already in itself a way to enable the constant and rapid renewal of the car fleet and this helps to cut down pollution and increase safety, but the rental firms are not satisfied and are constantly coming up with new consultancy ideas which go even further towards guaranteeing the right balance between driver satisfaction and safety, reduction of CO 2 emissions and cutting costs.
