per lui le più vere, perché dotate di un potere magico che squarciava
il reale e che gli permettevano di sondare in esso le più autentiche
verità. La magia dell’esistenza era registrata dalla poesia, sua unica
interprete; così nascevano i suoi versi, liberi dall’accademismo e
dalle disquisizioni intellettuali, e lui vedeva cambiare le loro
sfumature, appena il tempo trascorreva, ogni volta che li rileggeva,
come i fiori di un giardino alimentato dal sole: “And some poems
go on delicately changing all that they share with us whenever they
are read over again, just as the flowers in a garden, with their light
and shadow, their shapes, and the rain or dew or sunshine on them,
change with every hour of a summer day” 12 . Come ricorda Mégroz,
“All ‘inspired’ or ‘magical’ poetry is shaped in and impelled from
the hidden activity of that vast sphere of mind which remembers
and feels so much more than the individual is aware of
remembering and feeling” 13 .
Il poeta riproduce nei suoi versi la fitta e affascinante rete di
significati che coglie nei momenti in cui il pensiero è libero dai
vincoli razionali, come quando si sogna. I versi, che nascono in
questi momenti producono potenti visioni che investono con
inaudita energia il lettore. “The poem throws the reader’s mind into
a more or less complete state of dream. It does this by infinitely
complex associations of sound, rhythm, image, pattern. Its beauty is
the reflection of the poet’s dream in the dreaming mind of
readers” 14 . Il lettore, secondo De la Mare, è in grado di
