was placed between the technical and scientific
exhibitors, an alien to all of them. A sympathetic
anonymous friend from New England broke
his heart and presented his rare specimen from
a meeting on the study of itch to me. Due acknowledgement
will be given to the donator in
future exhibits. This was my occasion to present
material, methods and design, and start a
discussion.
M aterials
A good bag of today is made of
synthetic fabrics, thin or heavy weave, of many
varieties. They emanate their typical scent, or
name it smell, stink, or odor, which stays with
them for years. Is there an analogy to the
markings in the animal kingdom, superpotent
pheromones? A typical specimen is light yet stable,
other fellows are really heavy as to stand
the conquest of Mount Everest or the Moon.
Congress organizations have offered us also
cheaper ones, discount bags, which fall apart
before you use them. Others are manufactured
of expensive materials. Simple ones are produced
out of ordinary paper, paper maché, waxed
paper, linen or cotton. Politically speaking,
these are the materials of the Greens, of which
there are increasing party members in many
parts of the world.
The exquisite designer specimens are made of
leather, flawless hide stained in beautiful shades
of brown or black, with the holder’s name
imprinted in golden letters, not showing on the
outside, but rather understated on the inside.
Politically speaking, an appropriate outfit for
the pure conservative. Such trophies are not
given to the ordinary or at mass meetings, but
only to the upper elite. They seem to have gone,
maybe for fiscal reasons. I can whisper into
your ear that I own such a piece.

The standard shape is that of a simple
attaché-case, originally without a handle. With
the next generation of dermatologists and the
wave of modern trends came the rucksack, the
backpack type. This was smart, as the younger
and not so young generations loved this design.

che vale per qualsiasi collezione: spille da balia,
mollette, statole di fiammiferi, autografi, o oggetti
d’arte moderna, raccolti per hobby o business.
Il mio primo “vernissage” ebbe luogo in occasione
di un congresso internazionale, Praktische
Fortbildungswoche für Dermatologie und Venerologie
(Practical Educational Week for Dermatology and
Venereology), durante il quale esibii, fra vecchie e
nuove, 70 borse disposte su una mensola per 10
metri. Mi sentivo come un mercante che esponeva
la sua merce in un bazar. La mia “bancarella” si
trovava tra gli stand delle varie aziende. Mi presero
per un alieno!
Un mio carissimo amico del New England del
quale preferisco tacere il nome, durante un congresso
sul prurito, mi regalò, distaccandosene
con dolore, una rarissima borsa congressuale. In
seguito, in occasione di altre mostre, questo anonimo
donatore ebbe il giusto riconoscimento. Ho
colto questa occasione per presentare materiali,
metodi, “design” e cominciare la discussione.
M ateriali
Oggi una buona borsa è sempre di
materiale sintetico, la stoffa può essere leggera o
pesante. Esse emanano un caratteristico “odore”
che potremmo anche chiamare olezzo, puzza, che
comunque si conserva per molti anni. Potremmo
azzardare un’analogia con la marcatura dei superpotenti
feromoni nel regno animale. Il modello
tipico è piuttosto leggero, non molto solido. A
volte se ne incontrano di pesantissimi, più adatti
forse, ad una conquista dell’Everest o della luna.
Nei congressi ci hanno anche consegnato borse
più a buon mercato, che mettiamo da parte
ancor prima di usarle. Altri modelli sono invece
costruiti con materiali più costosi.
Le più semplici sono di cartone pressato, di cartapesta,
di cerata, di tela, o cotone. Usando un
linguaggio politico, questi sono i materiali dei
“Verdi” (in Germania molto popolari n.d.t.), che
hanno sempre più rappresentanti in molte parti
del mondo. I modelli più esclusivi sono senz’altro
in pelle, impeccabili e sobri nel colore: cuoio,
marroni o neri. Il nome del possessore, in lettere
dorate, è opportunamente fissato all’interno e
non all’esterno della borsa. Politicamente parlando,
il perfetto corredo del Conservatore “DOC”.
Questa sorta di trofeo non è certo riservata alla
massa, ma è appannaggio solo di una ristretta
élite. “Vi sussurro in un orecchio che ne possiedo un
