The market for table tomatoes is slowly changing with
types like oxheart, mini San Marzano, datterini and a
range of plum tomatoes mini, medium, oval and large -
all gaining in popularity at the expense of more traditional
types, such as cherry, red cluster, large-fruited
green (salad tomatoes), Marmande (ribbed salad tomatoes)
and tomatoes of the San Marzano kind.
Despite this, the red cluster type tomato, which is
grown in all the areas of tomato cultivation in Italy and
in particular in Sicily and Lazio, still retains considerable
importance. That’s why it continues to stimulate
interest on the part of seed companies who are offering
a number of new varieties.

Il mercato del pomodoro da mensa sta lentamente mutando,
con la crescita di consensi verso tipologie come Cuore
di Bue, mini San Marzano, datterini, mini plum, plum medi e
ovali o grossi plum, a scapito di tipologie più tradizionali,
come cherry o ciliegino, rosso a grappolo, verde a frutto
grosso (insalataro), Marmande (insalataro molto costoluto),
allungata indeterminata (tipi San Marzano e simili).
Nonostante questo, la tipologia rosso a grappolo, molto
diffusa in tutte le zone di coltivazione e in particolare in
Sicilia e Lazio, mantiene ancora una notevole importanza.
Ecco perché continua a riscuotere l’interesse delle
società sementiere, che propongono un buon numero
di nuove varietà.
