Escherichia coli: let’s avoid
irresponsible reactions
Escherichia coli,
evitiamo leggerezze
It is very difficult to take stock yet of the situation created
by the Escherichia coli epidemic in Germany. Difficult
because at the time of writing this editorial (early June)
conflicting reports and denials are still flying about.
And it will, presumably, become more and more difficult
with the passage of time: as in the case of certain
crimes, determining the truth about what happened is
made more difficult, debatable and questionable by the
disappearance of the evidence. Last year in the U.S.,
faced with an outbreak of toxic infections (of relatively
minor importance) which seemed to have been caused
by tomatoes, Usda technicians at the most prestigious
universities in the world were left groping in the dark.
Some information of a basic microbiological kind may,
however, throw some light on the situation and enable
us perhaps to understand the irresponsibility with
which the outbreak was treated, at least in the first
part of the emergency.
It is not a matter of specious hair-splitting to emphasize
that E coli is a bacterium and not a virus (the two
have often been confused).
E coli, then, is a bacterium, and it is one that which is
generally considered harmless, indeed we live with it
every day: it thrives in the colon of humans and all
warm-blooded animals.
That habitat is already
indicative of the ideal
conditions for its
growth: temperatures
of around 37 degrees
and a non-acidic environment.
There are
strains, however, such
as the infamous O157:
H7 (or the lesser
known O104: H21),
which are highly dangerous,
since a few
cells are enough to
cause enterohemorrhagic
infections and
even death.
Fare il punto sulla situazione generata dall’epidemia
da Escherichia coli in Germania è molto difficile. È
difficile nel momento in cui scriviamo questo editoriale
(inizio giugno) in cui si rincorrono le notizie e le
smentite sulle cause.
E sarà, presumibilmente, sempre più difficile con il
trascorrere del tempo: come nei casi di crimini, la
ricostruzione dei fatti è resa più difficile, opinabile e
confutabile dallo scomparire delle prove.
Già l’anno scorso negli Usa, di fronte ad un’epidemia
di tosso-infezioni (di minor portata) che pareva all’inizio
causata da pomodori, i tecnici dell’Usda e delle
più titolate università brancolarono nel buio.
Qualche notizia di base di carattere microbiologico
può, comunque, aiutare a fare chiarezza e
magari a comprendere con quale leggerezza il
fatto sia stato trattato, perlomeno nella prima
parte dell’emergenza.
Non è specioso sottolineare che Escherichia coli è
un batterio e non un virus (le due cose sono state
spesso confuse).
L’Escherichia è quindi un batterio in genere considerato
innocuo, con cui conviviamo quotidianamente:
vive nel colon dell’uomo e di tutti gli animali a sangue
caldo.
L’habitat del batterio
ci indica già le condizioni
ideali per la sua
crescita: temperature
attorno ai 37° in
ambiente non acido.
Vi sono ceppi, come il
famigerato O157:H7
(o il meno noto
O104:H21), che sono
altamente pericolosi,
dato che poche cellule
bastano per causare
infezioni entero-emorragiche
e addirittura il
decesso.
