Testlab
There are a number of suppliers for car insurance in Belgium.
For this issue we had a look at the web sites of four of
the major players in this sector: Ethias, AXA, KBC and Fortis.
Tests were performed on a global user acceptance level and
primarily focused on appeal, userfriendliness and information
retrieval. IE6, IE7 and Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.9 were used
as browser.
KBC (www.kbc.be)
The KBC web site is built in a sober and
easy-to-use fashion. The complete site
is available in Dutch and French with the
same layout. Switching to English or German
is possible, but not for insurance information.
The top menu bar contains the
language button, a sitemap, a link to all
the offices and agents of KBC and an online
help-function. There is also a search
functionality present which works nicely.
The information presented on the site is
quite exhaustive and well-organized. It is
more a guide where you can read from A
to Z everything you need to know about
buying & selling a car and getting your
driver’s license (even with an on-line trial
exam). You can do an on-line simulation
for the loan of your new or second-hand
car, but not for the calculation of your car
insurance, which is a pity. Therefore you
have to contact one of the agents which
is possible through an on-line search on
zip code, city or name. For those who are
already a KBC on-line customer, they can
directly contact their trusted client adviser
by filling in their bank account number.
On every page of this website, you can
get a printable version and you can also
choose to increase the font size of the
text displayed in the center.
There are no performance issues: the site
loads quickly and all the pages are displayed
correctly. Quite handy is that the
links you follow during the navigation
through the different topics is always
displayed on top of the screen, so all the
time you know where you are with regard
to the home page. (Clicking on the KBC-
As a conclusion, we can say that KBC has
a clean and professional website, which
tends to be a little too sober when using
it for a longer period. It is definitely useful
to have a look at before you purchase
your car, but to be complete an on-line
simulation for the car insurance policy
would be very much appreciated.
Fortis (www.Fortis.be)
Fortis gives us a site that is only available
in French or Dutch with a very crowded
homepage. The navigation bar is placed
on top of the page, and selecting an item
opens a drop down menu of which the
content is not always clear.
A site map is available but only displays
general information about Fortis as a
company. Luckily there is an excellent
search-function present.
Starting from the www.fortis.be site, the
“Fortis Insurance Belgium” site is available
as a link on the homepage. When
navigating to Fortis Bank Insurances you
do find “car insurance” easily, but for
more information you have to navigate
to a different link (www.fortisbanking.be/
portal/Start.asp). Only here you finally
get clear information and can search for
the nearest agent, make an appointment
and there is an on-line simulation pos-
