2007). Horse keeping on farms is very limited. 70% of farms with horses have
fewer than 5 horses and/or ponies. Horse keeping as diversification is a small
branch and in view of the small number of horses probably constitutes a hobby
rather than a business. It is therefore recommended to perform the monitoring
locally where horse keeping as diversification is concerned.
Wind energy
Wind energy is a form of green energy which can be generated with wind tur
bines placed on farmland. The wind turbines can be owned by the farmer or the
land can be rented for installing a wind turbine. The economic monitor is in
tended for farmers who own a wind turbine. Renting land does not fall under di
versification. An economic monitor can study the economic revenue, in which
region this is highest and how much subsidy is received per unit of energy sup
plied.
Local products
The sale of local products is very diverse. It primarily consists of processing
raw materials (such as milk) to multiple composed products linked to a certain
region. The sale of products varies from small scale forms of home sales to
contract production for food processers and distribution centres. The Founda
tion for Local Products (Stichting Streekeigenproducts Nederland (SPN)) con
trols the quality mark for local products which fall under the European guideline.
This is broader than the local products originating from agriculture. The monitor
for local products may be set up in partnership with SPN and Boerenverstand.
This needs further study.
Agricultural childcare
Farms which offer childcare can do so in two different forms: as host families or
as an independent nursery. Fewer rules apply to farms offering a host family
and it is not necessary for the farmer's wife to be qualified. Farms offering inde
pendent nursery care can join the Associated Farm Childcare (Verenigde
Agrarische Kinderopvang (VAK)). There are currently 20 farms in the VAK and
another 6 farms were certified in the spring of 2008. The VAK records the
numbers of associated farms. We therefore suggest joining up with the VAK and
monitoring these figures.
