A 6. Internal evaluation, analysis, perspectives and expectations for the research programme 1. Strengths The members of the programme are involved in a broad spectrum of research projects, and in a range of national and international collaborative activities. The group is successful in raising governmental and nongovernmental funds. 2. Weaknesses The number of ordinary professors in this group is limited. The success of the programme is dependent on the programme leader, who holds the only regular chair. This issue will have to be addressed in the next period. 3. Opportunities In the period under review the successful research into books and their readers in the 1750-1850 period has come to an end. A synthetic publication bringing the results together for an international audience is a desideratum for the next planning period. In the coming years the emphasis will be more on scientifi c and scholarly infrastructures, i.e. universities and scholarly societies in the 19 th and 20 th centuries. Problems concerning citizenship, the role of history and the status of the Humanities have been explored in depth. In the next period this research will continue, aided by recently acquired NWO grants. 4. Threats With the completion of both the NWO-research programme on Dutch Culture in its European Context’ and the research-programme on books and their readers in the 1750-1850 period, the programme was in danger of losing focus and coherence, but a new focus is in the process of development.
