No âmbito do trabalho desenvolvido ao nível
da Investigação Aplicada — tanto na área
tecnológica como florestal — da Consultoria
e da Formação, muita da acção do RAIZ tem
incidido sobre soluções que favorecem uma
exploração sustentável da fileira florestal.
Para isso tem concebido ferramentas que
permitem o diagnóstico do solo e do estado
nutricional dos povoamentos de eucalipto o que,
a médio prazo, garante uma exploração
equilibrada da floresta e a utilização dos
terrenos mais adequados a cada tipo de
produção. Para chegar a este ponto, foram
essenciais os trabalhos de zonagem
desenvolvidos nos últimos anos, com
a caracterização dos solos em todas as
propriedades do grupo Portucel Soporcel.
Nos primórdios da indústria da pasta e do papel,
era impossível estimar a produtividade,
os consumos de água ou as necessidades
nutricionais associadas a cada exploração o que,
em alguns casos, poderia trazer resultados
inesperados. O trabalho do RAIZ permite,
através da caracterização das amostras do solo
recolhidas, definir tanto as propriedades
químicas do solo, como a sua pedregosidade,
inclinação ou as necessidades nutricionais.

and Training, a great deal of the work undertaken by
RAIZ has been focused on the provision of solutions
which promote a sustainable forest chain.
Hence, it has designed the necessary tools to
diagnose the soil and nutritional conditions of the
eucalyptus plantations, which in the medium
term, will guarantee a well-balanced operation
of the forestry area and the choice of land that is
more appropriate for each specific production.
To reach this stage, it is fundamental to
undertake soil zoning works throughout the
Portucel Soporcel group´s property, a task that
will take several years to complete.
In the early days of the pulp and paper industry,
it was impossible to estimate the levels of
productivity, water consumption or nutritional
needs of each specific planted area, which in
some cases led to unexpected results. The
activity performed by RAIZ not only defines the
soil’s chemical properties, but also its stone
content, slope or nutritional needs, through the
characterisation of soil samples. Once this
information is matched with the available data on
the climate conditions in the different areas, it
will identify homogeneous soil zones, after which
it can be decided which species to plant. As the
