Nas copas das árvores, as sementes do
eucalipto, bem protegidas dentro das cápsulas,
são inacessíveis à maior parte das aves que as
procuram apenas para pousar. Mas os troncos
são muito procurados por pica-paus, em busca
dos insectos que se alojam entre a casca
e o tronco da árvore. Ironicamente, a presença
do pica-pau traz más notícias para a indústria.
Afinal apenas as árvores atacadas por pragas
lhe podem fornecer alimento.
A todo o conjunto de animais que acabam por
integrar as matas de eucaliptos no seu habitat,
juntam-se ainda numerosos insectos e toda
a fauna microbiana do solo que permite que
a terra permaneça fértil e as árvores cresçam
saudáveis até ao próximo corte.
A biodiversidade patente na Quinta de São
Francisco é o reflexo da atitude e da prática
do grupo Portucel Soporcel em matéria de
defesa da biodiversidade e de conservação dos
valores naturais do seu património florestal
enquanto parte integrante da política de
sustentabilidade do Grupo.
In the trees’ crowns, the eucalyptus seeds, well
protected within their capsules, are inaccessible
to most of the birds which only look for trees on
which to perch. However, the trunks are very
much wanted by woodpeckers looking for the
insects that lodge themselves between the tree’s
bark and trunk. Ironically, the woodpecker’s
presence is bad news for the industry. After all,
only pest ridden trees supply this bird species
with food.
Joining the animal community in the eucalyptus
forests are numerous insects and an entire
microbial fauna that lives in the soil and enables
it to remain fertile for the trees to grow healthily
until their next cut.
The existing biodiversity at Quinta de São
Francisco reflects the attitude and practices of
