PRODUCTIVE CHAINS OF AGRARIAN BASE AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF
THE REGION OF THE LOWER TOCANTINS
ABSTRACT
The region of the Lower Tocantins River, with his great agro-ecological diversity, suffers important
impacts due to the construction of the Tucuruí dam. A Popular Plan for Sustainable Development
(PPDS-Jus) has been developed for the region, which recommends the aggregation of “Detailed Studies
of Value Chains”. In this article, we present the first results of these studies which were carried out
under a convention between Electronorte, the Amazonian Development Agency (ADA) and the
Department of Higher Amazonian Studies (NAEA). We included 34 value chains (of agriculture,
extractivism, fisheries and timber industry) that form the basis of the rural economy and hence for the
regional development of the nine municipalities which take part in the PPDS-Jus (Abaetetuba, Baião,
Barcarena, Cametá, Igarapé-Miri, Limoeiro do Ajurú, Mocajuba, Mojú e Oeiras do Pará). The construction
of the chains is based on Input-Output Matrices, and the analysis of the results is carried out by
comparing the different chains with respect to their value of production, value added, mark-ups, final
demand destiny, and importance of the sectors in the local, federal state and (inter-) national level,
including their forward and backward linkages. Based on this, strategies for the development of the
region are discussed.
