Justino, E.A. Study of runoff control with the use of retetion reservoir in the Córrego
Lagoinha watershed, Uberlândia-MG city. Msc Dissertation, College of Civil
Engineering, Federal University of Uberlândia, 2004. 183p.
ABSTRACT
The increase of the frequency of inundations occurrence in the brazilian cities in the last
years motivated the development of this work, in which the efficiency of a retention
reservoir is evaluated, to control the runoff increase, direct effect of the uncontrolled
growth of the urban mesh. To simulate urbanization a watershed was chosen in Uberlândia
city, then four different occupation sceneries were analyzed: pre-urbanization, current,
future I and future II. The retention reservoir adopted is of the centralized type and it was
implanted in the central area of the Córrego Lagoinha watershed. The pre-urbanization
scenery was the reference to dimensioning the control structure. The sceneries simulation
showed that for an increase of 54% in the index of impermeable area, the peak discharge
can suffer an increase of 59,40% on the peak discharge of the pre-urbanization scenery. In
the face of those increments, the net pluvial drainage installed showed insufficient to drain
the new coming discharge, affirming the need to use alternative measures for the flood
control. The control structure adopted in this case showed a reliable reduction of the
hydrograph peak to the watershed, in up to 45,13%, and it also allowed a retard of 30
minutes in the discharge peak time.
Keywords: retention reservoir, runoff control, urban drainage, reduction of discharge peak,
centralized control.
