outro lado, das duas soluções avançadas
para o remate dos muretes, é precisamente
o ornato indicado como aquele que “não
serve”, o que irá, segundo nos parece, ter
seguimento, tal como se conclui através de
um olhar atento sobre o Jardim actual.
Do ano de 1807, altura em que realizou
finalmente a compra da parte da cerca dos
Marianos, agendada há já 33 anos, data
o pronunciamento mais decisivo de Félix
Avelar Brotero, encarregado desde 1791
da organização científica do Jardim e da
regência da cadeira de botânica e agricultura,
acerca do plano a seguir no Jardim. O
relatório enviado ao reitor, a 5 de Março de
1807, reveste-se da maior importância, quer
pelo facto de nele Avelar Brotero precisar a
definição e os objectivos deste tipo de estabelecimento,
quer pela indicação das suas
partes essenciais e secundárias [7], acompanhada
do levantamento do que estava feito
e do que havia de o ser. Dela se depreende,
concomitantemente, uma crítica velada às
anteriores restrições pombalinas, as quais,
embora na memória, seriam conveniente e
conscientemente esquecidas com o passar
dos anos e o avolumar de exemplos de similares
jardins que outras universidades europeias
vinham promovendo.
Da exposição deste naturalista, por muitos

a veiled criticism of the previous Pombaline
restrictions, which, though still within living
memory, had been conveniently and consciously
forgotten with the passage of the
years and the development of similar gardens
in other European universities.
The arguments put forward by this naturalist
(whom many called the “Portuguese Linnaeus”)
are interesting as regards the Coimbra
Garden. In relation to its essential parts,
Brotero highlighted: “ordered beds” (E),
confirming that “this is done with walls, balconies
and iron gates”; “Parterre – groups
without any scientific order, contributing to
the decoration and conservation of many
species” (P), adding that this was “almost
finished on the upper level”; “hot and temperate
house” (T), of which the temperate
house was ready; “Shelter” (A), “begun on
the eastern side of the temperate house;
“Site for seed beds” (S), “begun on the side of
the arches and only later planted with trees
that demand shelter”; “Avenues and copses”
(L), “1. on the land between the main street
and the wall along the public road; 2. on
the slopes of the hill next to the walls of
the Carmelite and Benedictine grounds;
3. on a portion of the terrain right next to
the northern gate entrance”; “Damp shady
