gadura pontuaram o Jardim e a mata: instalações
sanitárias, dependências para o pessoal,
depósitos para adubos e arrecadação
de ferramentas, estufas e estufins.
Ao nível do programa decorativo, a CAPO-
CUC não deixou de aplicar aqui a mesma
política que seguira nos grandes volumes
erguidos na Alta universitária. À escultura
reservou-se o papel de enobrecer o
espaço e «doutrinar» os seus utilizadores,
ora enquanto tributo a «figuras notáveis»,
ora enquanto alegoria do saber. A primeira
estátua pensada para o Jardim foi a de Júlio
Henriques. O contrato para a sua execução
foi celebrado em Agosto de 1944 com Salvador
Barata Feyo; porém, só em 1950 seria
assente em frente à fachada Este do antigo
Colégio beneditino.
Em Julho de 1946, ajustou-se, com o escultor
Joaquim Martins Correia, a execução em
gesso de uma estátua alegórica à botânica
que, concluída em 1948, só seria passada à
pedra em 1949, altura em que se procedeu
enfim ao estudo do sítio da sua colocação,
optando-se por remetê-la para a estufa fria.
Por último, entre Abril e Setembro de 1948,
o escultor José Pereira dos Santos executou
um medalhão em bronze com o retrato de
Luiz Carrisso, destinado a coroar o recanto
em frente do portal de D. Maria, dotado
de um pequeno tanque, de que subsistem
peças desenhadas, embora não assinadas
nem datadas.
Outros melhoramentos pontuais completaram
o efeito geral que se pretendida conferir
ao Jardim Botânico, apagando as «mazelas»
que o tempo lhe havia impresso “para
o conjunto ficar mais harmonioso” 26 . Substituíram-se
os degraus em pedra da escadaria
principal do Jardim, restaurou-se a gradaria,
os portões e as cantarias das escadas
do quadrado central, edificou-se o muro
do lado do Arco da Traição, distribuíram-se
placas identificativas de plantas por diversas
zonas e chegou ainda a ponderar-se uma
iluminação grandiosa da mata.
No que diz respeito à flora, para além da

Despite odd improvements, in 1949 the situation
became unsustainable as a result of
the threat to cut off the water supply by the
municipal services. Abílio Fernandes managed
to resist a definitive cut, but the continuation
of the drought in 1950 ultimately
led him to make a new appeal to the president
of CAPOCUC, urging the construction
of a tank near the statue of Avelar
Brotero, under the avenue running parallel
to Avenue Júlio Henriques. The site was
considered the most suitable for four reasons:
it was the entry point for the waters
from the underground springs; its relative
height meant that it could supply most of
the Garden; it would be simple to connect
the tank to the pipes, and it could be supplied
by autotanks, if there were a shortage
of water from the springs.
In February of the same year, the project
was approved. However, the invitation to
tender was only issued in September 1960.
The tank was to be buried, as planned,
between the statue of the former scholar
and the main gate. This “concealment”, justified
for “technical reasons”, also overcame
“an architectural problem that was difficult
to solve”, as described in the specifications
27 .
The part of the former College of St Bento
that housed the Botanical Institute also
received attention from CAPOCUC. After
considering various possibilities, it was
decided to reserve it for the Institutes
of Botany and Anthropology. The work
needed to adapt the space and divide it
between the two institutions progressed
slowly with frequent interruptions, and was
only properly finished in the 1970s.
As regards the Botanical Institute, there was
an exchange of correspondence in 1944 and
1945 between Manuel de Sá e Mello and the
