To make capable, enable;2. To become convinced, persuade oneself; and 3. Tomake believe, persuade”. i begin this article from thisreflection and from the fact that, when searching forthe meaning of the word capacitation in two gooddictionaries of our idiom, i found out that it is anadaptation of a foreign language expression – inthis case, the english language.Therefore, whenever we mention “technicalcapacitation”, we mean the efforts of a professionalin the search for tools that will make him capable orenabled in technology of different areas, such as ours,the pulp and paper area. “Technical capacitation”then, is related to the buildup of a “knowledgeinventory”. in our sector “the knowledge inventory”is the set of skills and capabilities related to theproduction, utilization and commercialization ofpulp, paper and their derivatives.Such abilities – or capabilities – are relatedto the raw materials and inputs used in theproduction of cellulosic pulp, in the manufacturingof the most diverse types of paper, in theconversion and printing processes; in obtainingbyproducts with commercial value; in minimizingthe environmental impacts; in processesautomation and control; in the management ofthe involved teams; as well as in the identificationof market demands and opportunities and in thecommercialization of products and technicalservices offered to customers.Technical capacitation in the pulp and papersector is, therefore, the buildup of the professionals’knowledge inventory which allows the sector to beactive, profitable and in continuous expansion. lastgeneration equipment, with sophisticate digitalcontrol systems and the corresponding operationmanuals and engineering drawings are part of thecompany assets. however, only the initial training ofthe teams involved in the operation, which is partof the equipment initial investment, is the start upof the capacitation of the company in this “newtechnology”, as the operational team must be ableand gain ability to deal with the new equipment.With this simple example, some important aspectsof “capacitation” become evident, such as beingdirectly connected with the teams (people), besidesbeing a continuous and growing process – in otherwords, once becoming capable and developed theability, such ability, if stimulated, tends to growjunho/June 2012 - <strong>Revista</strong> O <strong>Papel</strong>47
