CONTEMPORARY ART RS
EXHIBITION
In contemporary art, all means of artistic expression are equivalent
and articulate in a complex coexistence, making it possible for objects
from different fields to be integrated, through their basic characteristics,
into the artistic circuit. The result is a very diversified panorama, works
requiring classification, works approaching the banal, works which replace
finished results with documentation of the work process and which adopt
hybridism as an aesthetic proposal, thereby establishing new paradigms.
The exhibition launching the MACRS Catalogue of Works includes
selections from artists who have made important, innovative contributions
to the contemporary art scene, establishing dialogues in the local, national
and international scenes. Works are organized in four groups, giving
insight into various moments in the constitution of this collection.
The first group, works from the 1970s and 80s, illustrates the slow
and gradual introduction of contemporary art into the art system of Rio
Grande do Sul; the second, with works from the 1990s, demonstrates
the consolidation of this production in the local environment and the
support of new institutions; the third, from 2000 onwards, shows these
practices becoming hegemonic and quantitatively relevant, spreading
and diversifying throughout the artistic-grandiose panorama. The fourth
group is video art productions, a representative practice found throughout
the collection, though predominantly from the 2000s. In this exhibit,
however, works are not arranged chronologically, but rather, according to
dialogues that can be established between them, offering innumerable
paths to enjoyment.
This exhibition highlights the fundamental value of the MACRS
collection, showcasing works that significantly change perspectives in
artistic production, through their strategies, material, formal or content
resources. Works that break with the long held and prevailing modernist
visuality, causing cracks in a local art system that tends to be demonstrably
conservative. As a whole, this exhibition clearly demonstrates that
contemporary art has a lot to say about our times. We need to be open to
the new experiences it brings us.
