Antes de assumir a chefia-geral foi chefe-adjunto substituto de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento e chefe-adjunto de Transferência de Tecnologia na instituição. Em 2020 assumiu interinamente a chefia-geral da Embrapa Agroenergia e posteriormente passou por processo de seleção para então assumir a chefia oficialmente. Com experiência nas áreas de genética, genômica, melhoramentos de plantas e gestão de inovação e negócios, em entrevista exclusiva para a Revista REFERÊNCIA BIOMAIS, Alexandre comenta sobre o trabalho desenvolvido no centro de pesquisa e o perfil da instituição que trabalha com inovação aberta, e parcerias com o setor produtivo para a cocriação de ativos tecnológicos para o desenvolvimento da bioeconomia, notadamente biocombustíveis e bioinsumos. Before assuming the Head position, he was Deputy Head of Research and Development and Deputy Head of Technology Transfer at the institution. In 2020, he took over as Interim Head of Embrapa Agroenergia and later underwent a selection process to assume the position officially. A Embrapa Agroenergia comemora 17 anos de criação em 2023. Como surgiu o centro de pesquisa? A Embrapa Agroenergia foi criada como uma ação do Plano Nacional de Agroenergia (2006-2011). Foi um programa que existiu e que estimulava o desenvolvimento do setor de agroenergia no país e elencava uma série de ações, entre elas a criação de um centro de pesquisa da Embrapa que fosse dedicado à pesquisa com agroenergia e que pudesse coordenar as ações. Algumas unidades da Embrapa já atuavam com desenvolvimento de tecnologias da agroenergia como biocombustíveis, bioenergia mas de uma forma dispersa nos seus 43 centros de pesquisa. Até 2006 não tinha um centro especializado em agroenergia e então a unidade foi criada efetivamente, inicialmente concebida dentro de um modelo que espelhava o plano nacional de agroenergia que tinha quatro grandes eixos: bioetanol, biodiesel, florestas energéticas e coprodutos, além de resíduos. Como foi o processo de estruturação da Embrapa Agroenergia? No primeiro momento os trabalhadores contratados não tinham o perfil associado aos quatro eixos temáticos. A unidade foi estruturada com base em funcionários que já tinha e no primeiro concurso já mudou o perfil dos pesquisadores. No início não tinha equipe, nem sede própria e começou a atuar em colaboração com outras unidades da Embrapa. A sede em Brasília (DF) foi inaugurada somente em 2011 e a área de laboratórios em 2012. Então diria que desses 17 anos que comemoramos em 2023, temos efetivamente 11 anos de atuação com pesquisa própria já com equipe de pesquisa completa. Nesse meio de caminho, interessante que entre 2006 e 2012 houve um movimento bastante perceptivo no mundo de se associar a agenda de agroenergia de combustíveis a uma agenda maior de economia que pudesse utilizar as biomassas provenientes da agricultura ou resíduos da própria atividade agrícola para produzir, não somente biocombustiveis e geração de energia elétrica, mas gerar uma série de outros bioprodutos, dentro de uma concepção que passamos a chamar de biorefinaria, visando volume de produção mais elevado, preços mais baixos para atender grandes mercados. Com base nessa lógica uma nova leva de profissionais já passou a incorporar essas necessidades. Normalmente as unidades da Embrapa tem agrônomos, biólogos, e passamos a ter químicos, engenheiros químicos, farmacêuticos, pessoal de bioprocessos, biotecnologia, que permitiu trabalhar nessa lógica de biotecnologia industrial. Assim passamos Embrapa Agroenergia was created 17 years ago. How was the Research Center created? Embrapa Agroenergia was created as part of the National Agroenergy Plan (2006-2011). It was a program that existed, and that stimulated the development of the Agroenergy Sector in the Country and listed a series of actions, including the creation of an Embrapa Research Center that would be dedicated to research in agroenergy and that could coordinate the actions of other units. Some Embrapa units were already working with the development of agroenergy technologies such as biofuels and bioenergy, but in a dispersed way in its 43 Research Centers. Up to 2006, it did not have a specialized center in agroenergy, so the Unit was effectively created, initially conceived within a model that mirrored the National Agroenergy Plan that had four primary areas of study: bioethanol, biodiesel, energy forests and byproducts, and waste. What was the process for structuring Embrapa Agroenergia? At first, the employees did not have a profile associated with the four areas of study. The Unit was structured based on the employees Embrapa already had. So, in the first hire of new employees, the scientific staff profile changed. Initially, the Unit did not have its own team or headquarters, and it began collaborating with other Embrapa units. The headquarters in Brasília (DF) was inaugurated only in 2011, and the laboratory area in 2012. So, I would say that of these 17 years that we celebrate in 2023, we effectively have 11 years of experience with our own research lab and with a complete research team. In the meantime, it is interesting that between 2006 and 2012, there was a very perceptive movement in the world to associate the fuel agroenergy agenda with a more significant economic agenda that could use biomass from agriculture or residues from the agricultural activity itself to produce, not only biofuels and electricity but also generate a number of other bioproducts within a concept that we have come to call biorefinery, aiming at higher production volumes and lower prices to serve large markets. Based on this logic, a new wave of professionals has already started to incorporate these needs. In the past, Embrapa’s units only had agronomists and biologists. Now, we have chemists, chemical engineers, pharmacists, and bioprocess and biotechnology personnel, which allowed us to work in this logic of industrial biotechnology. Thus, we began to guide the Unit’s action more focused on bioeconomy and bioproducts until, in REVISTA + BIOMASSA + ENERGIA 29
