Rheumatic fever, a non-supurative complication of infections by group A streptococci,
remains a major health problem, especially in developing countries. This article
makes a global overview on the epidemiology of rheumatic fever and infections
by group A streptococci, highlighting the importance of the most rheumatogenic serotypes
of these bacteria and the recent reemergence of severe, invasive streptococcal
infections associated with outbreaks of acute rheumatic fever in school-aged
children and young adults, particularly described in United States and Europe.
