As I watched pet nutrition
blogger Rodney Habib’s TedX
video below, I found it simultaneously
jaw-dropping and not
surprising. After his dog, Sammie,
was diagnosed with cancer,
Habib went on a mission to
find out why canine cancer is a
growing epidemic. Currently,
one out of every two dogs will
be diagnosed with cancer at
some time in their life, mostly
between age 6 and 12.
I have a 13-year-old Labrador.
Admittedly, I’m obsessed
with my awareness that he’s approaching
the end of his life.
But, what if he weren’t? What
if he could live until he’s 30 like
8 Foods People Commonly Mistake As Healthy
Don’t blindly trust any company
that tells you a certain food
is healthy. Unfortunately, most
brands care more about profits
than your health. Over the years,
you’ve probably discovered some
“healthy foods” that caused more
harm than good. This confusion
usually happens due to false advertising
and flawed scientific
studies (think: “low fat” products
that have more sugar and calories
than their high-fat counterparts).
Below I have listed 8 foods
that might seem healthy from
marketing efforts, but are actually
not.
1. Veggie Straws
Most people believe that anything
with the word vegetable is
healthy. But the truth is, veggie
straws are potatoes and corn covered
with vegetables. And they’re
filled with preservatives.
Don’t assume you’ve eaten
your vegetables when you consume
veggie straws. You’re better
off eating real vegetables. Or
baked sweet potato fries.
2. Low Fat Foods
The low fat craze started because
of the belief that saturated
fats are unhealthy, but recent
studies show that’s not true.
When manufacturers removed
fats from food it tasted
horrible, so they added more
sugar to make the food tastier.
And as you know, sugar causes
anxiety, triggers cravings and
is ultimately harmful to your
health.
3. Fruit Juice
Just because juice is extracted
from fruits doesn’t make it
healthy. Even homemade fruit
juice is not the best; it may contain
vitamins but it lacks fiber
and contains the same amount of
5 Clever Ways To Throw A Cheaper, Greener Wedding
Some girls spend a lot of
time daydreaming about what
their wedding will look like.
When it finally comes time
to plan the event, they’ve already
got ideas about dresses,
colors, music and food.
I was not one of those girls.
I had other things on my mind,
like graduate school, buying
a house, and paying off credit
card debt.
So when my longtime boyfriend
and I finally decided to
make it official, I was a little
overwhelmed.
Having spent the better part
of the last year planning this
shingdig, I now know a) why
people hire wedding coordinators
and b) how hard it can be
to plan an event this size that
doesn’t create a ton of waste.
Bottom of Form
When you’re putting a wedding
together on your own, going
out of your way to do extremely
“green” things can be
costly. What I learned is that
it’s also about looking for the
subtle opportunities to keep
impact to a minimum. Often
it’s just a matter of choosing a
slightly less traditional option
over the expected.
Are you planning a wedding,
or do you work with soon-tobe-married
couples that are
interested in reducing their
wedding’s environmental footprint?
Read on for some of the
easiest ways to make the event
a little greener.
1. Electronic Save-The-
Dates
Save-the-dates are a great
way to let friends and family
know “We got engaged! Keep
your calendar open.” They’re
especially necessary if lots of
your loved ones will have to
travel for the wedding. The
downside is, save-the-dates are
costly to print, require you to
purchase stamps, find current
addresses, and then you spend
line where you can access them
at any time!
2. Buy Alcohol In Bulk
And I don’t just mean buy
a lot of it. If you’ll be providing
libations for your guests,
caterers will try to force you to
choose bottles and cans of beer.
These units are simply more
convenient for bartenders to
handle, but choosing keg beer
is actually a smarter choice.
Not only will you pay less per
serving, there won’t be 9,534
bottles and cans to recycle or
(even worse) throw away.
is yours in one fell swoop. You
can even have a contest for
most creative cup! And obviously
this idea works with wine
and non-alcoholic beverages as
well.
4. Choose An All-In-One
Venue
Tradition dictates that the
wedding happens in one place
(usually a church) and the reception
happens in another.
With non-traditional ceremony
venues becoming the
new norm, however, there’s an
opportunity to eliminate this
the world, he spoke with researchers
learned that dogs have a higher
rate of cancer than any other
mammal. In the ‘70s, dogs lived
to age 17; today the average life
span is 11. Why?
Diabetes is up 900 percent
in dogs in the last five years.
Obesity is up 60 percent. While
10 percent of all cancer cases
are genetic, 90 percent are the
results of lifestyle and environmental
influences, including
stress, obesity, infection, sedentary
lifestyle, toxins, pollution
and most importantly diet.
scientist, Thomas Sandberg,
conducting a 30-year-old study
(the longest observational study
to date). Sandberg is hoping to
prove that poor quality food
may cause cancer to develop in
dogs and cats, mainly due to a
compromised immune system.
Here’s the part of Rodney’s
TedX Talk that was jaw dropping
for me. Research shows
that dogs on a diet of dry commercial
pet food fed leafy green
vegetables at least three times a
week were 90 percent less likely
to develop cancer than dogs
that weren’t. And dogs fed yellow/orange
vegetables at least
three times a week were 70 percent
less likely to develop cancer.
I feed Sanchez and Gina organic
kale, spinach, green beans
and carrots, along with many
fruits. Personally, I wasn’t surprised
by the benefits, but by
the research on just a little bit of
produce being added to kibble
for such a profound effect on
canine health. I know the human
health benefits of giving
up processed foods, I just didn’t
know they didn’t have to be
eliminated completely for such
stellar benefits for dogs.
Thomas Sandberg has Great
Danes, who typically live only
six to eight years. In a 6-year
study of 80 dogs fed a completely
raw diet with low amounts of
carbs, only one dog developed
cancer.
Another study at Purdue
University showed a 90 percent
decrease risk of cancer when
they added green leafy vegetables
to a bowl of processed food
three times a week.
Beautiful Venue
You’ve got to go where you
budget allows, but if you’re
looking for ways to cut waste
and save money, choosing a
beautiful venue can be worth
the extra up-front cost. Here’s
why: a place that’s naturally
beautiful –think art gallery, botanical
garden, working farm,
or a historical home– doesn’t
need to be decorated. You can
skip the flowers, bunting and
pricey centerpieces and just let
guests soak up the beauty of the
existing landscape.
Remember Maggie, the
world’s oldest dog? In addition
to a diet that included raw fed
grass milk, she also self fasted
some days. She lives on a dairy
farm and exercises all day long,
often getting in 9 Kilometers
(5 1/2 miles). Obesity also is
now known to be a contributing
factor to canine cancer.
We have dogs because we
love them. We bring them
into our human world and expect
them to adjust. They do,
because all they want to do is
please us. We expect them to
follow our house rules, listen
to the music we choose, build
their life around our schedules,
and accept the food we choose
for them. But, what if we knew
more and chose differently for
them? How long would they
live?
