Astrakhan branch of FSUE
Rosmorport was formed in
September 2003 to ensure
safe navigation and anchorage
in the seaports of Astrakhan
and Olya. The establishment of
the branch is due to the presence
in the Astrakhan region of
the Volga-Caspian maritime navigable
canal (VCMNC) connecting
the Caspian Sea and the inland
waterways of the Russian
Federation with access to the
waters of the Mediterranean and
the Baltic basin.
The port of Astrakhan with a
capacity of 10 million tons of
cargo per year and the port of
Olya with a capacity of 4.3 million
tons are in the sphere of interests
of Astrakhan branch.
One of the main tasks of the
creation and further development
of Astrakhan branch of FSUE Rosmorport
is to maintain the Volga-
Caspian sea navigable canal in
predetermined dimensions.
Astrakhan branch of FSUE
Rosmorport carries out repairs,
construction and operation of
berthing complexes, navigation
safety facilities in the ports of Astrakhan,
Olya and on the Volga-
Caspian Maritime Navigable
Channel (VCMNC). It provides repair,
dredging works in the waters
of the ports and channel. It
performs an annual update of
floating and coastal aids of navigation
equipment. It ensures the
operation of the global maritime
disaster communications system
(GMDCS), navigation, communications
systems, ship traffic
control (VTS), and provides various
types of services.
The number of objects on the
balance of the branch is 2,537
units, including real estate - 108
units and fleet - 29 units. The
number of berths in operation is
15 units, including part of the
berths leased to the port of Olya.
The branch’s fleet consists of
three icebreakers, four dredgers,
six auxiliary units, including two
pilot boats, other service and
auxiliary vessels.
The Volga-Caspian Maritime
Navigable Canal is one of the
longest in the world, its length is
188 km, in connection with this
Astrakhan branch uses about
350 summer, winter floating and
stationary navigation signs.
Astrakhan branch maintains
the channel’s navigation dimensions
in dimensions: 80–100 m
wide and 4.2 m deep.
The number of pilotage service
is 64 people. And the general
pilotage from the Astrakhan
sea port to the Astrakhan sea
raid includes 100 nautical miles.
From April 1, 2004, a VTS
system was established in the

The technical equipment
of the branch’s VTS includes
a center in the port of Astrakhan
and four radar technical
posts in the VCMNC zone. The
total length of the system’s coverage
is 204.7 km.
