INtRODUCtION
Infections of the deep neck spaces (IDNS) is still
a common entity in children especially in developing
countries. Although recent advances in the antimicrobial
therapy has reduced the mortality due to IDNS, delay
in the diagnosis and treatment of these infections
ABStRACt
Objective: In this study, we sought to describe
some clinical, laboratory and prognostic features of
young children with infections of deep neck spaces
(IDNS) in Sisli Etfal Education and Research Hospital.
Material and methods: Young children who had
had taken the diagnosis of infections of deep neck
spaces were retrospectively investigated in terms of
etiologies, utility of imaging studies and effectiveness
of antibitic regimens.
Results: Thirty-nine children aged 1-24 months
(mean 11.4±6.2 months) were included into the
study. The most common complaints of patients with
INDS were restlessness (100%) and fever (97.4%). All
patients have taken either ampicillin+sulbactam or
cephazoline + clindamycin combination intravenously
and nine of them (23%) underwent surgical drainage.
Complete resolution was achieved in all patients
without any complication except one child with deep
vein thrombosis.
Conclusion: The cases with deep neck infections
in early childhood most commonly admit with the
complaints of restlessness and fever and they can be
treated essentially with antibiotics.
Key words: infection, deep neck, children
may lead to severe complications(1) On the other
hand, there have been many studies regarding various
aspects of IDNS(2); but, to our knowledge, no study
focused on the IDNS in children under two years of age
and the most appropriate antibiotic regimens in this
age group. In this study we retrospectively investigated
