Á≈ «¬ø‚∆¡È ¡À‚ÚØ’∂‡ The Indian Advocate www.theindianadvocate.com.au 17 Rising Sports Star Taranpreet Singh Walia is a rising sports star residing here in Western Sydney, and has found great athletic recognition in the field of cricket. He is 15 years old currently in Year 10 attending Glenwood High School. The Indian Advocate conducted an interview with the young athlete. What sports do you play outside of school, what position and which level do you play at? I play soccer and cricket outside of school. For soccer I play at a club level and play it for fun. My position is more as a striker and right wing. For cricket I play at a much higher level. I am a bowling all-rounder meaning I bat and bowl but mainly bowl. For batting I either open the batting or bat number 5 while for bowling I am a right arm leg spin bowler. What inspired/motivated you to play sports? My dad was one of the main motivators that inspired me to take up different sports such as cricket, soccer and tennis but as I got older I became more attached to cricket. He put in many hours of his time every day to play cricket with me and those moments I still cherish today. The person that inspired me too become a leg spin bowler was Harbhajan Singh who was played for the Indian cricket team. Do you plan on becoming a professional player in either of these sports? Yes I aspire to become a professional cricketer and have the opportunity to not only represent myself and my country but also my family and friends who have always helped me at every turn. I am still working very hard to reach this goal and every step I take is taking closer and closer to my goal. How do you manage both extracurricular sports and school work? To be completely honest I was never the best at managing both my extracurricular sports and my studies because I loved watching T.V and movies. Until about a year ago I had my priorities set the opposite of what they should have been and as I began to progress through the years and studies became harder and harder I finally realized that I should spend more time on my studies. Before I used to spend 40% time on cricket 45% watching, T.V and movies and only about 15% on studies, but now its 50% cricket, 10% T.V and movies and 40% studies. Have you gained any achievements whilst playing sports? In cricket I have been able to achieve many of my goals such as being able to be selected into reps at the age of 9 and playing it for 6 years straight, then from performing well in reps being selected in the Sydney west team and the state challenge team for both years, then soon being selected in the NSW cricket academy for the past 3 years and also being selected for Greenshield at the age of 14 which is the minimum age you have to be. What role does your family play in supporting you? The bottom line is that without my caring mum, dad and brother who put so much time and effort into me improving my cricket I wouldn't be half the person I am now and I am so thankful to them for always being there for me. My dad is always taking me to the cricket nets to practice and driving me too games that are more than an hour away and then also staying there to watch me play is a blessing, then my mum who also drives me to trainings and games and on top cooks the best food for the whole team during our breaks is the best and then there's my 9 year old brother, who goes to all my games and watches me play and barely every whines about getting bored or going home is unreal. What are your relations with your team mates and how do you support each other? My team mates are always there helping and encouraging me through my good and bad patches and having teammates as reliable as them is amazing. Without them I would never have been playing the levels I am now and all my coaches have always looked out for my best interest and have guided me to become the player I am now. 1 specific coach is Anthony Clarke. How does your sibling look up to you? Doeshe also want to follow in your footsteps? My little brother is always looking up to me for my approval whenever we play any sports or games. He is always waiting to hear me say how I think he is doing and he is also a leg spin bowler but is left arm. He is not sure what sports to play but he is focusing mainly on tennis while still practicing cricket time to time just like I once did. Is anyone else in your family athletic like you? The only person aside from me and brother who is athletic in family is my dad who was once a state boxer for Mohali which is in India and he won many gold and silver medals at that level. What are your plans for the future? My plan in life is to continue putting effort into my cricket no matter how hard or frustrating it may be because I do not want to ever regret it in my life that if I put a little more effort I could of gone through but I also want to put lots of focus into my studies in case things don't work out like I hoped they would such as an injury or something else. I want to keep balancing both these aspects of my life out and hopefully it all pays off in the end. Is there anything you would like to add? I really want to thank my family who always supported me, my friends and teammates who helped me further my game and my coaches who guided and helped me become the cricketer I am today. -Interviewed by The Indian Advocate
