An Interview with an Artist Amanpreet Sharma
Amanpreet Sharma whom
resides in Sydney is a wildly
talented sketch artist and finds
time to create extravagant
artworks whilst taking on
responsibilities as a mother and
a working woman.To find out
more about Amanpreet The
Indian Advocate conducted
the following interview.
When did you first
discover you had a
talent for art?
At the age of three I was
handed a pencil and paper
and told to do something
with it. My first instinct was to throw it , but after
a couple of days I realized it was meant to be
used for much more. It was used to create, to
draw, to scribble down my imagination and show
people how I felt inside. Then at the age of eleven
I made what I thought was a rough sketch of my
grandma and once my father saw it, it was one
art competition after the other. In year 12 I took
up textile designing for vocational training. In
college, I did a diploma in arts and crafts and a
degree in fine arts (making sculptures).
How long does it take for you to
produce these artworks?
Every artwork is individual so none of them
will have a settled for the same time. The least
amount of time taken on an artwork is around
ten hours and the maximum is 20- 24 hrs. since
I am a working woman and mother of three
amazing kids, I do most of my work at night in
a peaceful and quiet environment.
What is your inspiration while creating
these artworks? Who or what inspires you?
I first saw the art of Shoba Singh ji at a very
young age when photos of his art were in every
house. Since then I have been inspired and
motivated to make a canvas and some paint
come to life like he did. Unfortunately, he died
when I was 6 but his art lived on and inspires
me to this day .
Is anyone else an artist in your family?
My father does art as a hobby. He introduced
me to art at a young age and would always
encourage me to choose art as a long-term goal
and suggested it as a career in the future. I am
the only person in my family with a degree in
art.
Do you copy photographs or use your
imagination and memory when creating
your artworks? Or both?
Both, if I am making a portrait I will often
have a photo nearby so I can clarify the details.
However, if I am painting I use my imagination
and create it the way I want it to be. I have made
many sketches for people from photos such as
Amrinder Gill who I have personally handed the
sketch over to.
Do you have any other talents other
amanpreet1204@gmail.com
than sketching?
yes, Singing and some times
poetry. I would like to share a
few lines.
Kuch apnepan ka ahsas karate
Tohda hum se pyar jatate
Rooh ko hamari sakoon de jate
Apno ko hamare karib latte
Kash hamey bi aishe dost mil
jate
Itna hi toh chha tha zindagi
Ki hum bhi dil khol kar muskrate
Milegi kabhi nahin iss zindagi
mein
Khushi khash hum khud ko
samja pate
Dost bahut hain hamare jhotti hi sahi
Iss umeed par ji patte
Kash hamey bhi aisse dost mil jatte
Samajte hamre jazbaton ko na mazak
Hamare pyar ka updatte
Apno ki nazro mein hamey na giratte
Rotte rotte hum ko hasaate
Kaash hum itne tanha na hotte
Hume bhi asse dost mil jatte
-Aman Sharma
Having seen how beautiful your
artworks are, are you a professional
artist or is this a mere hobby? Do you
maybe want to become a professional
artist in the future?
I am professional part time artist but in future
I am planning to start my own studio where I
can conduct workshop and convert to full time
artist.
Has your work ever been recognized
professionally? Have you ever had
some of your artworks in an exhibition?
I have participated in various exhibition
in my college and in different exhibitions in India
here I participated in online competitions through
Face Book for example 'Art master Australia
international' in which I have won a merit award
for one of my art works.
What do your friends and family think
of your artworks?
My friends and family are always motivating
me and always encourage me to do more
especially my husband who has always increased
my moral boost. My family, kids and friends have
supported me every step of the way which i am
very grateful for that 5and hope they continue
to do this for many years to come.
Do you have anything else to say about
your artwork and talent?
Art is my passion and the reason i am doing
art is to introduce new generation to our Indian
culture and traditions while living in overseas. I
started this from my home and am now currently
doing the portraits of celebrities and singers so that
this generation come to know how vast our culture
is. I will continue to do this till end. Thankyou.
