Treasure trails of Chantilly,
riding past seasons and flavors

If there was one place in the outskirts of Paris that deserves
a visit, it is Chantilly. There, fragrances come
from the grass, the trees and the flowers, the air is fresh,
the environment calm and natural. The castle is located
in the north of Paris, first built in the Middle-Ages on
a large rock in the middle of the marshes. The Marshal
at the time of Francois I, the Duke Anne de Montmorency
renovated the medieval castle into Renaissance style.
After his granddaughter married the Prince de Condé, it
also became the stronghold of the renowned Condé family.
The Princes of Condé are the closest kinsmen of the royal
family (Prince de sang). The most famous of them is “le
Grand Condé “, cousin of Louis XIV, his image can be seen
everywhere in the castle. In spite of his numerous martial
victories, because of his betrayal during the Fronde, Louis
XIV banished him away from Versailles to settle in Chantilly.
Later, to make amends to the king, he invited him and 3000
court members from Versailles for a party that lasted for
three days. In preparation for the banquet, the maître d’hôtel
Vatel did not sleep for twelve days running. For the last
day of the feast, on a Friday where Christian tradition dictated
that fish must be served, the fish delivery had still not
arrived. Unable to stand the pressure of failing the Prince,
Vatel committed suicide with his own sword. However, the
fish arrived an hour later, which is why future generations
consider: until the last moment there is still hope! As the
result of this banquet, the two cousins buried the hatchet
and rebuilt kind relations.
The galery of the castle holds a gigantic painting, ordered after
Grand Condé’s death by his son. It is entitled “Repentance” (Le
repentir), representing “Grand Condé”, stopping with one hand
Pheme (goddess symbolizing fame and renown) from proclaiming
his rebellious actions against the King, with the other hand he
urges another Pheme to express his repentance. On the bottom
left, the muse of History tore shameful pages off his book, sitting
on the back of Saturn, god of Time.
After the French Revolution in 1799, the extension of the
castle has been razed to the ground, the family collection has
been confiscated. The last descendant of the Condé family was
killed by Napoleon, leaving no heir, thus the heritage has been
passed to the Prince’s nephew and godson Henri d’Orléans,
Duc d’Aumale, who was only eight years old when he

城 堡 中 處 處 可 見 他 的 形 象 。 這 位 堂 兄 雖 然 戰 功 累 累 , 但 是 因 為 背
叛 路 易 十 四 搞 投 石 黨 , 被 堂 弟 貶 罰 到 遠 離 凡 爾 賽 宮 廷 的 尚 蒂 伊 。
後 來 大 孔 代 為 了 討 好 路 易 十 四 , 邀 請 了 包 括 國 王 在 內 的 三 千 凡 爾
賽 宮 廷 來 賓 , 舉 辦 了 持 續 三 天 的 宴 會 。 為 了 籌 備 宴 會 , 膳 食 總 管
瓦 德 勒 連 續 十 二 天 沒 睡 覺 , 在 宴 會 的 最 後 一 天 —— 基 督 教 傳 統 中
一 定 要 吃 魚 的 星 期 五 , 卻 遲 遲 沒 運 來 魚 , 瓦 德 勒 感 到 壓 力 巨 大 、
沒 法 向 親 王 交 代 , 就 拔 劍 自 殺 了 。 遺 憾 的 是 魚 在 他 自 殺 後 一 個 小
時 就 到 了 。 所 以 後 人 得 出 經 驗 : 不 到 最 後 一 刻 就 還 有 希 望 ! 不 過

inherited it. His father was the last French king
Louis-Philippe, from the House of Orléans who
gave the determining vote for the death of Louis
XVI. So, this family has issues with Napoleon supporters,
republicans, and royalists.
In 1848, another revolution started, the Duc d’Aumale
with his Royal father and the whole family fled to England.
While overseas, he bought back a great part of the family’s
collections. Twenty-three years later (1871), after his wife
and children died in England, the Duc d’Aumale returned
to France alone, and reconstructed Chantilly castle. Since
he had no direct descendants, and because he had personally
experienced the many changes in the country and in
his family, he donated everything to the Institut de France
prior to his death. The only condition was that they are not
to make any changes in the interior display and never lend
anything of the collection, so people can only look at it in
site. The castle we can visit today is in the exact state of origin.
Here is the most well-furnished private library, with a
collection of eighteen thousand books, dating back as far as
the tenth century. The Condé museum also owns the most
important collection of classical paintings in France after
the Louvre.
