SUMMARY

EDITORIAL

Petr Svoboda, Martin Šolc

On 10 December 1870, an architect was born in Brno, a promoter of modern architectural thinking, a sworn opponent of Art

Nouveau ornamentality, a humanist and a very peculiar personality who indelibly entered the history of architecture. A lesser

known fact, at least among the general public, is that this architect founded his own construction school in 1911, which was

attended by ca. hundred students. Most of them also worked directly in Loos’s studio. After the Second World War, these

students spread all over the world, thus their work can be found in Europe, the USA, Israel or New Zealand. Loos’s students and

followers created over two hundred architectural designs on the territory of today’s Czech Republic, most of which have been

built and some have survived to this day. This publication is dedicated to these buildings and their creators.

SPEECH FOR THE OPENING OF THE ADOLF LOOS EXHIBITION, BRNO, 1964

Dušan Riedl

On 17 September 1964, an exhibition dedicated to the personality of Adolf Loos was opened in the Brno House of the Lords

of Kunštát. The exhibition was curated and organized by the Vienna Museum of the 20th Century, today known as MUMOK,

and before it reached Brno, it was installed in Vienna and Paris. In his opening speech, Dušan Riedl very aptly summarized the

principles, value and significance of Loos’ work. We reprint the text from the manuscript as it has been preserved in the library

of the Methodical Centre of Modern Architecture in Brno, which manages the Riedl Library and Archive.

ADOLF LOOS: MEINE BAUSCHULE

Alena Havlíková

In 1912, the first report of the opening of Loos’s building school appeared on the cultural page of Pester Lloyd. The newspaper

saw Loos’s private school as a hope that could perhaps penetrate the walls of Viennese building culture. A year later, in the

October issue of Der Architekt, Adolf Loos published his article entitled Meine Bauschule. The paper deals with the circumstances

of the origin of Loos’s private school and the teaching methods of the architect. It also focuses on the students of his private

school, and especially on Loos in the role of a teacher.
