og overstyrmanden, som Ikke havde fået søvn i flere døgn,
havde udarbejdet en nødplan for skibets navigering, hvis dette
skulle ske. Naturligvis uden at orientere nogen om bord om, at
denne fare bestod, for at deres ængstelse ikke skulle smitte af på
besætningen og gøre ondt værre. Der var selvsagt roser til kaptajnen
også hjemmefra denne aften, for omend der ikke på noget
tidspunkt bestod nogen egentlig livsfare, så var faren for alvorligere
havari overhængende i perioder. Forestil jer, at man
i givet, og værste, fald skulle have styr på over 100 tons containerlast,
der har revet sig løs af fortøjningerne, at skulle sikre
dem med kæder, så de Ikke rovsede randt i bunden af skibet.
Og så har mine tal på havarerede ananasdåser hele vejen
igennem været forkerte, viste opgørelsen. - Det drejede sig ikke
om 40.000 dåser ananas, men om 340.000 dåser, der gik til spil­
de.

Summary
In the Summer of 1979 Hans H. Thomsen, the writer ofthe article, signed on
as radio operator on the East Asiatic Company's ship M/S »Sinaloa« in Van­
couver. For the next four years he sailed with the »Sinaloa« and other EAC
ships. Among other things Hans H. Thomsen brought with him the weight of
ten years experience as radio operator on various Greenland radio stations, but
he knew nothing about life as a sailor.
The article, which is based on his own diary entries, gives a direct portrayal of
the tasks of a radio operator and of life on board.
The M/S »Sinaloa« sailed in line service in the Pacific, and the article describes
to what extens all navigation is dependent on the weather, even in the case ofa
new container ship with modern technological aids and navigation equipment.
