English summary
This rapport is the result of our 10 th semester project, and therefore the master thesis in building management at
Aalborg University, Department of Production. Following is an English summary, where the main conclusions
are presented.
The starting point of this project is the lack off efficiency in the Danish building industry.
Companies in the Danish Building sector have been trying out different methods for developing
the efficiency and quality in the building production for several years. Especially methods known
to be efficient at industrial companies have been adapted to improve the efficiency
The projects did not show the same good results. This lead till some frustration among the
different parties in the industry. However the consensus was that the different concepts would be
very useful if they were based on a better documentation. In spite off these experiments, the
contribution to the development stands as an isolated island, where the results can’t be
reproduced on other projects.
The main reason for the unsatisfying results off the experiments is the inadequate documentation
off the results and the processes. The reasons are:
1. Inadequate focus on development projects.
2. Lack of continuously evaluation on the building process.
3. Lack of evaluation on the building process between the involved parties.
4. Impossible to identify best practice and focus areas.
5. Tendency to focus on personal gain between the involved parties.
6. No one taking responsibility for the use of existing knowledge.
The purpose of this project is: A higher productivity and quality in the Danish building
industry.
The goal of this project is: a new learning culture between the partners in the building industry,
so that knowledge gained through the building projects, is collected and contributes to following
projects involving the same companies and others.
To achieve the goal, following products has been developed:
A 7-step model, that illustrates a cycle off activities to better knowledge management
A system to administration off data for evaluation off the building process, SAVE
A conceptual model for the IT-platform for SAVE, called SAVEData.
A plan for further development off SAVEData, and implementation on the building site,
and in the company.
