Botanic Garden
Living plant material requires intensive, continual nurturing
and planning in its propagation. Particular areas of the garden
must be replanted year after year; soils become exhausted after a
few years and have to be replaced.
In horticulture far-reaching change has also taken place in
the last hundred years on many levels, which can be summed up
with the words mechanisation, automatisation and security. Such
changes apply as much to the open spaces as to the greenhouses.
The meadows are no longer mown with a scythe, watering is no
longer carried out by hand, but automatically, and power saws
have long since replaced hand saws.
The inclusion of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum
on the heritage register for Berlin in 1985 had particularly farreaching
consequences for the appearance of the garden. Currently
an extensive garden care manual is being compiled, which sets out
in the long term guidelines for the upkeep and care of the ground.
The aim of the manual is to plan the future development of the
garden and ensure that a famous garden creation is passed on to
posterity broadly unaltered. HWL
