1 The Danish background for utilising biomass
In Denmark, the combined production of heat and power (CHP) has been
extensively used since 1904 and has paid a significant contribution to energy
saving and CO 2 emission reduction long before the greenhouse effect
was considered a problem.
In the beginning of the 90s, awareness of the CO 2 problem increased
and a political decision to achieve a 20 % reduction of the CO 2 -emission
(from the 1988 level) was made. As a result the Danish electric utilities
were obliged to utilise 1.0 million tonnes of straw, 0.1 million tonnes of
wood chips and 0.1 million tonnes of various types of biomass annually
from the year 2000. The difficulties experienced especially with straw and
the uncertainty about how renewable technologies are supported in a
competitive power market have postponed the time schedule for implementation.
2 Technologies considered
ELSAM is the largest utility pool in Denmark and as a consequence of political
decisions, ELSAM and its subsidiary Tech-Wise A/S have been major
actors in developing and implementing technologies for utilisation of
biomass for combined heat and power production in Denmark. In an extensive
R&D programme the following biomass utilisation technologies
were examined:
