Energetische Nutzung halmgutartiger Biomasse: Stand der Technik und Perspektiven
4 Experience
The experience summarised in the following has been collected from all
biomass plants operated by Elsam. The difficulties with utilising biomass
in general and straw in particular have been described before, so this section
will concentrate on the practical implications of the problems on the
plants’ availability and performance.
Straw Handling
The basic ideas behind the straw handling concept now widely used for
straw-fired plants were first developed by Tech-wise for the Grenå CHP
plant and subsequently improved in the plants at Studstrup (co-firing)
and Enstedværket. It is based on bales each weighing approx. 400-700 kg.
The transport from the fields or farmers’ storage to the plant is performed
by trucks, which are unloaded by a specialised crane simultaneously performing
measurements of weight and moisture of the straw.
The fully automated storage is normally designed for 2-3 days’ full
load capacity of the boiler. Figure 3 shows the crane in operation. Incidents
with bale columns tipping in the storage have been experienced,
hence staff access to the storage area has to be restricted, but in general the
automated straw handling works very well.
