ceramitec 2003
Internationalität der
Besucher und Aussteller
erreicht neue Rekordwerte
Die ceramitec 2003 konnte sich der weltweit
schwierigen wirtschaftlichen Situation nicht entziehen:
Ausstellungsfläche, Aussteller- und Besucheranzahl
erreichten nicht die Ergebnisse der ceramitec
Messegelände in München-Riem statt.
In
Internationality of visitors
and exhibitors reaches
new record figures
The ceramitec 2003 could not detach itself from the
difficult economic situation worldwide: the exhibition
area and the number of visitors and exhibitors
did not reach the results of the ceramitec 2000.
However a definitely positive signal is the increasing
internationality of both the exhibitors and the visitors.
This year’s trade fair was awaited by exhibitors and visitors
with tense anticipation. While many exhibitors at the last
event in 2000 hoped that the “valley of tears” had been overcome,
this time a large number travelled to Munich with
more subdued expectations. Many of the exhibitors we spoke
to indicated however that their expectations were surpassed
and that they were very satisfied with the development of the
trade fair and with the interest and the quality of the visitors
from the industry. The general tenor was: “Let’s hope that
many of the projects discussed will now be put into practice!”
For the second time the ceramitec took place at the new exhibition
site in Munich-Riem. This time the arrangement of the
halls was altogether clearer than in 2000. Machines, plants
and equipment for fine ceramics, refractories and technical
Mehr Pioniergeist und „Entwicklung on the job“
gefordert
Etwa 3,5 Mrd. 8 hat die Keramikmaschinenindustrie der
westlichen Industriestaaten im vergangenen Jahr weltweit
umgesetzt. Paul Eirich, Vorsitzender des Fachbeirates der ceramitec
und der Fachabteilung Keramikmaschinen im Verband
Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau (VDMA), rechnet für
2003 allenfalls mit einer Steigerung im unteren einstelligen
Prozentbereich. Eirich forderte die Industrie auf, ihre Ausgaben
für Forschung und Entwicklung weiter zu steigern. In
2,8 % vom Umsatz. Das sei nicht genug. Die
Quote sollte im mehrjährigen Durchschnitt mindestens 4 bis
5 Prozent betragen.
Forciert werden müsse die „Entwicklung on the job“, also vor
Ort, beim Kunden. Allerdings seien die Abnehmer kaum
bereit, das damit verbundene Risiko mitzutragen. Eirich: „Auf
ceramics and also the powder metallurgy sector were presented
in Halls B1 to B3.
Those interested in the heavy clay sector were first able to
gain an overview in Hall A1 of the raw materials and additives
offered, and then study the refractory materials, kiln furniture,
kilns and equipment presented in Hall A2. Machinery, plants
and equipment for the heavy clay sector were accommodated
in Hall A3.
Highlight of the opening event:
Ceramics for the Space Shuttle
Dr. Bonnie J. Dunbar, Assistant Director at the NASA Johnson
Space Center in Houston, Texas, impressed the invited guests
with her opening speech on the use of ceramics in space.
The experienced NASA astronaut, who has completed five
space flights and spent more than 1208 hours (50 days) in
space, came to the Space Shuttle programme through her
work as ceramics expert. Her report on the development of
the heat protection shield for the Shuttle demonstrated the
possibilities offered by the use of ceramics. While a heat shield
made of composite materials lasted earlier for only one flight,
up to 100 flights can be completed with the ceramic tiles
used today. In a development phase lasting nine years, the
ceramic tiles became increasingly lighter and more heat resistant.
The representatives of the heavy clay sector among the
audience were enthusiastic about these application possibilities
for ceramic materials and suggested the advertising slogan
“Ceramics – perfect for space and also for your house!”
More pioneer spirit and “development on the job”
called for
Last year the ceramic machinery industry of the western
industrial nations achieved a turnover worldwide of around
3.5 billion 8. Paul Eirich, Chairman of the Advisory Board of
the ceramitec and of the Ceramic Machinery Division of the
German Machinery and Plant Constructors Association
(VDMA), reckons at the outside with a percentage increase in
the lower single figure range. Eirich called on the industry to
further increase its expenditure for research and development.
In Germany the proportion lies on average in the

Halle A3. Der Verband der italienischen Keramikmaschinenbauer,
Acimac, hatte für 56 Unternehmen eine kollektive Präsentation
„TechGate“ in Halle B3 organisiert, auf einer Fläche
von 2 700 m 2 . Maschinen und Produkte wurden hier aber
region of 2.8% of turnover. This is not sufficient. Over an
average of several years the proportion should amount at
least to four to five per cent.
“Development on the job“ should also be stepped up, i.e. on
the spot, at the customer. However the buyers are hardly prepared
to share the risk involved. Eirich: “Hardly anyone is willing
to venture on prototype plants, which are optimized during
operation in the customer’s works in the first few months,
unless the manufacturer takes over the full risk of failure.” This
often resulted in the customer deciding in favour of the old
but time-tested solution instead of the new one.
Companies which embark on a combined risk develop more
quickly, are always up to date with the state of the art and are
therefore more competitive. Eirich continued: „A little more
pioneer spirit would be a good thing here.“
Visitors and exhibitors
Compared to the event in 2000, the ceramitec 2003 had to
accept a decline in the number of visitors of around 10% and
in the number of exhibitors of around 7%.
The Cersaie as a “tile fair“, which was held shortly afterwards,
surely drew away a few visitors from this sector. The present
difficult economic situation in many countries was probably
another reason. This time in many cases it was the decisionmakers
who visited the exhibition and to a lesser extent the
interested employees, which was confirmed in discussions
with exhibitors. Consequently the quality of the visitors was
assessed as being very high.
While the exhibition got off to a restrained start on Tuesday,
many stands in Halls A1 to A3 were very well attended from
Wednesday to Friday. In Hall A3, altogether 112 exhibitors
operating solely or mainly in the heavy clay machinery and
plant sector presented their products. Further suppliers and
raw material producers exhibited in Halls A1 and A2. Companies
whose main point of emphasis lies in other sectors but
also supply to the heavy clay industry exhibited in Halls B1
and B2.
Some of the exhibitors managed without large-area stands
and the presentation of machinery and plant and instead
introduced new developments for example in video
sequences. The stands were used for intensive discussions
with customers. The exhibition area was significantly smaller
compared to ceramitec 2000. On average the stands in 2003
were smaller than at the last exhibition.
At the ceramitec 2000 the majority of the Italian firms also
presented machinery and plant. This time only the Italian
market leaders and a few smaller firms in the heavy clay sector
had their own stands in Hall A3. The association of Italian
ceramic machinery manufacturers Acimac had organized a
collective presentation “TechGate“ for 56 firms on an area of
2 700 m 2 in Hall B3. However the emphasis of the presentation
was less on machinery and products. The joint stand,
modelled on a typical Italian piazza, was intended to serve as
an ideal location for meetings with customers and visitors.
Many exhibitors spoke of high-quality discussions with top
clients. During the exhibition many contracts were also negotiated
and often concluded. This was assessed at the fair as a
signal for a significant upswing of international demand.
Asked about the countries of origin of the visitors, many
exhibitors in Hall A3 mentioned Russia and Eastern Europe
particularly often, but also the Near East and Middle East,
South America and India. From the point of view of the
exhibitors, the unusually high internationality in international
comparison and the comprehensive range of products were
14 ZI 11/2003
in diesem Jahr deutlich internationalere Publikum kompensieren.
ceramitec und Tecnargilla – Was passiert 2006?
– Fis –
more than ever the trump cards of the ceramitec this year.
Many exhibitors held the view that the decline in the number
of visitors was compensated this year by the definitely more
international attendance.
ceramitec and Tecnargilla – What will happen in 2006?
This question was posed often by exhibitors and visitors. The
announcement that the Tecnargilla would now be held every
two years and therefore in 2006 in the same year as the
ceramitec, met partly with uncertainty and lack of understanding
among the heavy clay specialists and plant constructors
who were asked about the situation.
Especially for the exhibitors supplying the heavy clay sector,
2006 will call for a difficult decision: Will they go to only one
fair or to both, but with reduced expenditure? A decisive factor
in 2006 will probably be how the Italian and German
ceramic machinery manufacturers will react.
Another aspect not to be ignored in future is also the development
of the machine construction sector in other countries
such as China, and how the plant constructors in these countries
will act in future. At the opening press conference, Paul
Eirich said: “With China a new competitor is on the market,
which the European industry must reckon with to a greater
extent in the medium term. Within a relatively short period of
time a strong ceramic machinery industry has developed in
China, which is increasing its efforts to export, to some extent
already with success. This is demonstrated by the presence of
15 Chinese exhibitors at the ceramitec. At the last ceramitec
three years ago there were only two.”
Products and innovations
ceramitec 2003 – like the ceramitec 2000 – was not an exhibition
of great new developments. Above all, optimizations of
existing machines, plants and systems as well as improved
automation solutions were shown.
The Zi editorial staff has looked around during the ceramitec
2003 and has put together a summary of the new developments
which were not described in detail in the preview
reports in Zi 7/2003, Zi 8/2003 and Zi 9/2003. Due to the
large number of exhibitors and the hosts of visitors on the
stands, it was not possible to talk to all suppliers of the heavy
clay sector. Therefore the survey does not claim to be complete.
We would also like to present selected new developments
from the fields of fine ceramics, refractories and technical
ceramics. Perhaps we will see various solutions already at the
next ceramitec – adapted for the heavy clay sector. – Fis –
The fast drying concept
MobilSystem
with impact air flow,
which attracted great
interest at the
ceramitec 2003, has
now reached market
maturity. Rotho presented
the now available
MobilSystem as
the original version.
Many discussion partners
described this as
one of the exhibition
highlights in the
heavy clay sector.
MobilSystem
With its integrated
impact air flow onto
the products, the
MobilSystem sets a
completely new technical
standard both in
regard to the drying
times and the drying
quality. With the
MobilSystem, which
is suitable for both
flat roofing tiles and
accessory tiles, an
economical drying
process is achieved
with a high degree of
process safety. Here
the drying time can
be reduced by up to
75% and at the same time there is a significant
quality improvement in the dried
product. Activation of existing dryers is possible.
Further advantages are:
n low space requirement
n safe project layout through preliminary
tests with the RothoMobil
n fast running-in of the dryer
n reduction of operating costs and investment
costs
The MobilSystem modules, which consist of
plateau car and drying supports stacked
above and next to each other, form the
heart of the system. The air guiding channels
integrated in the drying supports are
the special feature here. The upper and
lower sides of these channels are perforated
and thus generate a defined impact air flow
Anziehungspunkte
In diesem Fall bedeutet
das eine Leistung von 76 Platten pro Minute.
Verdés presents de-airing extruder 074
specially designed for manufacturers of highly added value
extruded products such as split tiles or other special shapes
and special products: the new de-airing extruder 074, conceived
as a Combi model.
The main feature of this new extruder is its easy and total
accessibility not only to the auger body and vacuum chamber
but also to the entire pre-compression area of the mixer. This
new construction is especially convenient for installations
where frequent raw material or colour changes are required,
reducing downtime and preventing contamination between
different clays. In addition an inspection door over the vacuum
chamber gives this extruder excellent serviceability,
enabling the maintenance tasks to be carried out in less time
without having to open this extruder area.
The extruder and mixer shafts are independently driven by
means of two direct coupling motors. In both of these, frequency
converters provide for optimum operating conditions
for each product and shape. There is another independent
motor-reducer for the feeding blades located in the vacuum
chamber, which ensure uniform and effective feed into the
auger.
Ankantung und „Elektronischer Kurvenscheibe“
Die pneumatischen Drehantriebe wurden durch elektrische
Servo-Getriebemotoren ersetzt. Des Weiteren wurde die
Ankantung konstruktiv überarbeitet, um Einstellungen und
Werkzeugwechsel deutlich zu vereinfachen. Zusammengefasst
ergeben sich folgende Vorteile:
Höhere Leistung durch elektrische Antriebstechnik
n Ankantmesser einzeln einstellbar
Keller HCW: Innovative technology creates centres
of attraction
Under this motto the plant constructor presented its programme
at the ceramitec.
For the reliable universal cutter, in which the drive technology
was only recently completely revised, a chamfering device
with a completely new design was now introduced for the
cutter. This even more effective chamfering device is used in
the production of clinker pavers and masonry bricks with
chamfered edges.
A further focus of attention was the puncher with upstream
profiling device. Comprehensive discussions between clients
and design engineers formed the basis for the development
of this profiling device. The plant offers endless possibilities
for texturing of flat extruded clay columns. The reliable operating
principle of the downstream puncher was not changed.
To increase performance, the head frame and the punching
table were extended and the proven drive system of the universal
cutter was adopted. By extending the head frame, two
tiles in the format 300 x 300 mm can now be produced in
one work cycle. In this case this means an output of 76 tiles
per minute.
Keller HCW universal cutter with newly developed
chamfering device and “electronic cam disks”
The pneumatic turning drives were replaced by electric servo
gear motors. Furthermore the chamfering device was
redesigned to facilitate adjustments and tool changes. In
summary, the following advantages result:
Higher output through electric drive technology
n Chamfering knives individually adjustable
n At present the use of up to 3 chamfering tools is possible
Improved chamfering quality
n Reproducible replacement of tool sets for change of format
Short set-up time
n Lower number of tool sets necessary as connecting rods
can be exchanged
Lower acquisition costs
The universal cutter with “electronic cam disks” convinces
with its simple drive concept. The following advantages
result:
High outputs
With no other drive concept (neither linear drive nor mechanical
cam disk) such high outputs (short cycle times) can be
achieved than with a crank drive.
Simple drive components
Two identical standard servo gear motors with double crank
mechanism for the movement of cutting table and cutting
wire
n Low wear due to the simple drive structure (no mechanical
cam disks) and industrial scale manufacture and therefore
matured “standard servo gear motors”
The electronic cam disks of the cutting table and cutting
wire can be controlled independently from each other
In contrast to mechanical cam disks, there is no rigid connection
between the operation of the cutting table and cutting
wire
n 40% more time for the cutting phase (compared to the
mechanical cam disk with the same cycle time)
n Optimum cutting speed for each product with maximum
output
n High service life of cutting wires due to low cutting speeds
adapted to the product
Flat puncher with upstream rusticator
Keller HCW has completed a generation change with the reliable
flat puncher for flat extruded wall and floor tiles. Due to
the positive experience gained with the ”electronic cam disk”
in the universal cutters, the same drive concept was selected
for the flat puncher. Consequently the same advantages
described in the first section also apply for the flat puncher.
Furthermore, for the special case of application for tiles with a
width and length up to 600 mm, the design of the flat
puncher was modified in regard to both the bearing and the
moving parts. Lighter and also more stable aluminium
extruded profiles are now used in the head frame.
Punching system
n Tensioned, lasered spring steel sheets with a thickness of
0.5 mm serve as punching tools
n Different shrinkage rates of tiles can be corrected by
adjusting the punching knives
n The operational sequence of the punching knives is selected
so that the clay column is not clamped in between
2 punching knives. Holding-down devices, which are fixed
on the punching tool holder and arranged approx. 1 mm
above the clay column, ensure that even sticky clay
columns are not lifted up.
Varied product design
n The design of the spring steel sheet holders allows for rectangular,
rounded and also chamfered edges
n The spring steel sheet holders are designed so that they
can form a chamfer, a rounded edge, a rustic edge or a
straight edge during punching. (Fig. 3)
Rusticator
The rusticator is equipped with four profiling rollers, each
with a separate drive. For different roller diameters, the speed
of the individual rollers adapts to the clay column speed.
of porcelain.
Im Hubbodenofen kann auch nach dem TurboFiring-Prinzip
In the lift-base kiln, firing can also be carried out according to
the TurboFiring principle
Je nach Kundenwunsch und Produktionsanforderung können
die Öfen unterschiedliche Dimensionen und Designformen
aufweisen: Single-, aber auch beispielsweise Twin-Modelle in
doppelter Größe und mit zwei Bodenöffnungen. Auch die
Brenntechnologien der einzelnen Aggregate können sich
unterscheiden:
Thermischer Nachverbrennung (TNV)
n elektrische oder Gasbeheizung
n Betrieb in definierter Atmosphäre
den Heizmedien her.
geeignet. Das Konzept lässt sich sukzessive
ausbauen: Die Brennlinie kann bei einer
Produktionserweiterung ohne großen Aufwand
Lift-base kiln system
The system consists of up to ten modular lift-base kilns which
are served by a robot-like shuttle car. The intermittent kilns
are loaded from below and can be integrated by the newly
developed concept fully automatically into upstream and
downstream continuous production areas.
The handling shuttle with its intelligent controls is very versatile.
The shuttle riding on a rail system suspended under the
row of lift-base kilns forms the intersection between the firing
process and the peripheral material loading and unloading
station. The suspended automatic handling unit removes
stacks of green ware from the store, travels to the kiln and
transfers them onto the lowered kiln base plate. The entire
process is fully automatic, like the raising of the base element
to seal the kiln which is anchored on a steel platform. The
reverse process begins as soon as the kiln releases the fired
ware. The loading robot, which has filled and unloaded
neighbouring kilns in the meantime, rolls into position and
unlatches the kiln base which then drops down immediately.
After this signal the arm of the handling shuttle grips the
stack without any further command input and transports it
back to the finished product store on the kiln periphery. The
handling system then carries out a new loading and unloading
cycle.
Depending on customers’ wishes and production requirements,
the kilns can be configured with different dimensions
and design forms: single or for example twin models in double
size and with two base openings. The firing technologies
of the individual units can also vary:
n integrated or with separate removal of organic binders plus
connected thermal afterburning
n electric or gas heating
n operation in defined atmosphere
n operation with TurboFiring
All lift-base kiln models are based on the same construction
principle: multiple, pre-assembled individual modules which
arrive on site complete with ventilators, electrical installations
and heating elements. The fitters merely set up the interfaces
to the switch cabinet and the heating media.
Fully automatic loading and unloading: the MultiShuttle
functions as a central operating unit within a firing line
The modular plant concept is
particularly suitable for customers
with small or medium sized components,
highly fluctuating charge
quantities and frequently varying
firing processes. The concept allows
step-by-step expansion: in the
event of a production enlargement,
the firing line can be
extended without great expenditure
up to the maximum development
stage of ten kilns.
MultiShuttle replaces manual
loading and unloading of the kiln cars
Independent of the kiln type and cycle, a single loading robot
links the firing unit, product store, kiln furniture buffer and
work stations with each other.
The fully automatic system for loading and unloading of kiln
cars is extremely precise. The innovative loading robot transports
up to six layers of kiln furniture and glazed ware onto
the kiln cars. The integrated kiln furniture centring unit
ensures the precise positioning of the firing ware. With the
same repeating accuracy, the telescope arm draws a layer
from the car leaving the kiln and distributes this further –
either to the product or kiln furniture buffer store or onto the
plate circuit to one of the next work stations.
The shuttle operating with a maximum speed of 90 m/min is
navigated safely by a laser path measuring system. Through

its intelligent controller and the tracking system coupled with
the MultiShuttle, the unit recognizes reliably what product it
is handling and how it needs to handle it.
Even differences arising in the number of layers between the
cars being loaded and unloaded are managed safely. The
handling unit reacts, for example, by making up the missing
layers of kiln furniture from the immediately adjacent store. In
the reverse case the telescope arm of the MultiShuttle places
excess kiln furniture in the intermediate buffer rack. The system
decides by itself whether the ware is passed on directly
to the work stations or into the buffer store. The same applies
when stored ware has to be taken out of the buffer and fed
into the continuous process again.
In this efficient manner the system, acting like a robot,
bridges all the interfaces within the firing line. A single central
operating unit takes over all handling functions fully automatically.
The MultiShuttle can be combined with almost any kiln
type – from tunnel and roller kilns to pusher plate and shuttle
kilns. Eisenmann’s concept includes an efficient buffer. The
main advantages of the innovation lie in the optimum loading
of the kiln car. The furniture system can be adjusted flexibly
to the respective geometry of the article in a spectrum of
two to six layers.
The new system can also be used for applications outside the
porcelain industry. Eisenmann is currently installing a first
MultiShuttle plant for technical ceramics in connection with
the TurboFiring technology.
New high-velocity burner “ThermJet” with low
NO x formation
Eclipse Combustion has developed a new high-velocity
ThermJet burner in order to meet the increasing demands of
the industry and environmental regulations.
The ThermJet high-velocity burner was developed using the
staged gas/air mix method in order to reduce the NO x emission.
The burner consists of a metal casing, a rear wall with
openings for UV/ionisation electrodes and inspection glass,
combustion chamber (metal firing tube, burner block, SiC
pipe), jet for the air/gas mixture, air and fuel inlet flange with
metering orifices (Figure).
The total length of the high-velocity flame is about three
times longer than the visible flame mantle, whereby this has a
positive influence on the turbulence of the kiln atmosphere
around the setting. Impulse firing as an option of the Therm-
Jet operation increases the
turbulence of the kiln atmosphere
to an even greater
extent and leads to a further
rise in thermal efficiency. The
ThermJet family consists of
twelve sizes, ranging in
capacity from 44 kW/h to
