Zur Person:
Mario Botta wurde am 1. April 1943 im Tessin (CH) geboren. Mit 15 begann er eine Lehre
als Hochbauzeichner in Lugano. Nach dem Besuch des Liceo Artistico in Mailand begann er
ein Architekturstudium in Venedig, das er 1969 abschloss. Im selben Jahr gründete er in Lugano
ein eigenes Architekturbüro. Botta ist der wichtigste Vertreter der bekannten „Tessiner
Schule“. Gebäude aus seiner Hand stehen vor allem in seiner Heimat und im benachbarten
Oberitalien, inzwischen aber auch in den USA, China und Südkorea.

Mario Botta was born in Ticino (CH) on 1st April 1943. He started his apprenticeship as a
draughtsman in Lugano at the age of 15. After attending the Liceo Artistico in Milan he
started his architecture studies in Venice, which he completed in 1969. He founded his own
architecture firm in Lugano in the same year. Botta is the most important representative of
the famous “Ticino school”. He mainly designs buildings in his home country and in neighbouring
Northern Italy. However, there are also buildings in the USA, China and South Korea
in the meantime.

Von der Größe seines Büros her ist Mario Botta
ein ganz Kleiner, von der Bedeutung seiner Bauten
ein ganz Großer unter den Architekten dieser
Welt. Seit letztem Sommer gibt es auf dem
Penken das erste Gebäude, das der 70-Jährige in
Österreich gebaut hat: Die Capella Granata. Wir
haben mit dem Stararchitekten gesprochen.
Die Kapelle hat die besondere Form eines Zillertaler
Minerals, des Granats. Warum haben
Sie als Baumaterialien Stahl und Holz
gewählt?
Die Idee war, die Form an die des in der Natur
vorkommenden Granats anzulehnen und das
zum Thema dieser Kapelle zu machen. Die Umsetzung
erfolgte mit den Materialien Stahl und
Holz. Die strenge und mathematisch nachvollziehbare
Geometrie dieses Baukörpers sollte den
strengen Kontrast zwischen der Rationalität des
Menschen und der freien, organischen Natur darstellen.
Eine solche pure Form, so ein Edelstein
auf der Spitze eines Berges, ist auch die Gelegenheit,
die Verbindung zwischen Himmel und
Erde darzustellen. Der Baukörper ist durch die
Schwerkraft mit der Erdkruste verbunden, aber
ist umgeben von der Unendlichkeit des Universums
und der schönen Natur des Zillertals.

in the Zillertal mountains
Going by the size of his office Mario Botta is
not that big but going by the importance of
his buildings he is one of the greats among
the architects of this world. The first building
that the 70-year old has built in Austria has
been standing on the Penken since last summer:
the Capella Granata. We spoke to the star
architect.
The chapel has the special shape of a Zillertal
mineral, the garnet. Why did you
choose steel and wood as the building
materials?
The idea was to base the shape on that of the
natural garnet and to make it the theme of
this chapel. This was realised using the materials
steel and wood. The strict mathematically
reproducible geometry of this structure is supposed
to represent the strict contrast between
the rationality of people and free organic nature.
Such a pure shape, this kind of gemstone
at the top of a mountain, is also an opportunity
to illustrate the connection between heaven
and earth. The structure is connected to the
earth‘s crust by gravity but it is surrounded by
the endlessness of the universe and the beautiful
nature of the Zillertal.
War es etwas Besonderes für Sie, auf dieser
Höhe und in dieser Umgebung zu bauen?
Rein technisch gesehen ging es darum, diesen
geometrischen Körper auf dieser Höhe aus zwölf
gleich großen Paneelen zu bauen. Aber man
dachte dabei innen auch an eine leichte Holzkonstruktion.

this geometrical structure out of twelve
