Ob das wirklich die beste Taktik ist, weiß ich nicht, ich
kann aber keiner anderen wirklich folgen.
Wenn es den Beruf des Bloggers schon in meiner Jugend
gegeben hätte, er wäre mir sicherlich zu unglamourös
gewesen. Obwohl das Bloggen gesellschaftlich nicht als
ordentlicher Beruf anerkannt ist, liebe ich diese Tätigkeit.
Ständig fragen mich Leute, wo ich mich in 5 bis 10
Jahren sehe, oder was ich als Nächstes tun werde. Beliebt
ist auch die Frage, woran ich denn gerade arbeite. Dann
fühle ich mich wie die Platzanweiserin im Theater, die
gefragt wird, womit sie denn ihr Geld verdiene. „Sicher
wollen Sie das doch nicht ihr ganzes Leben lang machen?“
Die Frage aber, die mich wirklich wütend macht
ist, wieviel Geld ich denn mit meinem Blog verdiene.
Aufgewachsen bin ich mit dem Wissen, daß diese Art
von Fragen unhöflich sind. Obwohl ich schon viele Jobs
gemacht habe, bei keinem war die Neugier, was meinen
Kontostand betrifft, so enorm hoch. Gute Erziehung und
Manieren scheinen sich im Angesicht eines Bloggers zu
verflüchtigen.
Als Bloggerin bewege ich mich auf schwammigem Untergrund.
Auch wenn ich durch die ganze Welt fliege und
Vernissagen und Festivals besuche und ich vermutlich
ein größeres Publikum als einige Kunstkritiker und Journalisten
habe, fühle ich ich mich meistens eher wie ein
Underdog. Blogger haben keinen Presseausweis. Alle Privilegien
eines Journalisten können wir nicht in Anspruch
nehmen. Einige Museen und Galerien verstehen, daß
wir viel Öffentlichkeit für sehr geringe Kosten erzeugen
können, andere hingegen halten es noch nicht einmal für
nötig, uns mit Pressemappen zu versorgen, da wir nicht
auf Hochglanzpapier drucken. Die beantworten noch
nicht einmal unsere E-mails. Denen fällt nicht auf, daß
der Artikel über ihre Ausstellung bei Google an vorderster
Stelle gelistet ist, auch wenn er eben nicht auf einem
Blatt Papier abgedruckt ist. Für diese Leute existiert er

might be read by a larger audience than some art critics
and journalists but most of the time I‘m still the underdog.
A blogger doesn‘t have a press pass. We can forget
about the privileges that go with it. Some art institutions
and commercial galleries understand that we can do a
lot of publicity for them at little costs. Others, however,
believe that as long as what we write is not printed on
glossy paper it‘s not worth giving us a press kit or even
answering our emails. They don‘t care if an article I wrote
about one of their exhibitions has one of the top positions
on Google search, if it‘s not written on a piece of
paper it simply doesn‘t exist. I can‘t complain though. I
still believe I‘m incredibly lucky and best of all, I‘m free.
I never have to write a review in the hope a gallery or art
school will buy advertisement on my page, I don‘t have
a boss and I don‘t need to respect deadlines (as the editor
who commissioned me this article can attest), I don‘t
even need to have a clear editorial line. None of which
implies that I (or any other art blogger for that matter)
am not trying to be as professional, respectful and accurate
as possible. In fact, I‘ve often been described as a
control freak. I cross check the information several times,
use the photos that I make myself or wait patiently for
the artists to send me theirs, I add as many hyperlinks
as possible to enable readers to go deeper into the topic
should they want to and I go back to my hotel room
to blog about the conference I‘ve just attended while
everybody else is partying. I can‘t really afford a more
laid-back attitude. Everyone is given a voice in the socalled
„blogosphere“, but if you spread errors, absurdities
and slanders in your blog, if you‘re lazy and don‘t update
your log regularly, if you don‘t answer to comments and
emails, your readers will go somewhere else and you‘ll
only be a vox clamantis in deserto.
So „where do I see myself in five years?“ I have no clue
but I‘d be happy to be here again. The blog has opened
many doors for me. People contact me to give lectures,
