To cite the facts, here, from which I originally reached this law of sexual affinity, and the great number
of those who have confirmed it for me, is nonetheless, fortunately, in a certain sense superfluous.
Ein jeder ist gebeten, es zunächst an sich selbst zu prüfen, und dann Umschau zu halten im Kreise seiner
Bekannten; besonders empfehle ich eben jene Fälle der Erinnerung und Beachtung, wo er ihren
Geschmack nicht verstanden oder ihnen gar einmal allen "Geschmack" abgesprochen hat, oder wo ihm
dasselbe von ihrer Seite widerfahren ist.
Each was asked, in the mean time, to examine it in himself and then to carry out a survey in the circle of
his acquaintances; in particular I recommend precisely those cases of recollection and observation where
he did not understand their taste or even did not credit them with a "taste" at all, or where, from their
side, the same as his happened to occur.
Jenes Mindestmaß von Kenntnis der äußeren Formen des menschlichen Körpers, welches zu dieser
Kontrolle nötig ist, besitzt jeder Mensch.
Every person possesses that minimal measure of knowledge of external forms of the human body which
is necessary for this inspection.
Auch ich bin zu dem Gesetze, das ich nun formulieren will, auf eben dem Wege gelangt, auf welchen
ich hier zunächst habe verweisen müssen.
Further, I arrived at the law, which I now want to formulate, on the path which just, here for the moment,
I will have to postpone.
Das Gesetz lautet: "Zur sexuellen Vereinigung trachten immer ein ganzer Mann (M) und ein ganzes
Weib (W) zusammen zu kommen, wenn auch auf die zwei verschiedenen Individuen in jedem
einzelnen Falle in verschiedenem Verhältnisse verteilt.
The Law reads: "For sexual union always a complete man (M) and a complete woman (W) strive to
come together, even if, in every given case, [it] is distributed upon the two different individuals in
varied proportion.
Anders ausgedrückt: Wenn mµ das Männliche, wµ das Weibliche ist in irgend einem von der
gewöhnlichen Auffassung einfach als "Mann" bezeichneten Individuum µ und wω das Weibliche, mω das
Männliche dem Grade nach ausdrückt in irgend einer sonst oberflächlich schlechtweg als "Weib"
gekennzeichneten Person ω, so ist bei jeder vollkommenen Affinität, d. h. im Falle der stärksten sexuellen
Attraktion:

Stated another way: if mµ is the masculine, wµ the feminine in an individual µ who is labeled according
to the customary conception simply as "man", and wω the feminine, mω the masculine embodied by
degree in some person ω otherwise superficially in general designated as "woman", then in the event of
all complete affinity, i.e. in the case of the strongest sexual attraction:
(Ia) mµ + mω = C(onstans)1 = M = dem idealen Manne

Man mißverstehe diese Formulierung nicht.
One should not misunderstand this formulation.
Es ist ein Fall, eine einzige sexuelle Relation, für die beide Formeln Geltung haben, von denen aber die
zweite aus der ersten unmittelbar folgt und nichts Neues zu ihr hinzufügt; denn wir operieren ja unter der
Voraussetzung, daß jedes Individuum so viel Weibliches hat, als ihm Männliches gebricht.
It is one case, one single sexual relation, for which both formulas have validity, from which, however,
the second immediately follows from the first and does not add anything new to it; since we indeed
operate under the assumption that every individual has so much femininity as it lacks [gebrechen]
masculinity.
Ist es ganz männlich, so wird es ein ganz weibliches Gegenglied verlangen; ist es ganz weiblich, ein ganz
männliches.
Were it completely masculine, so will it desire a completely feminine counterpart; were it completely
feminine, a completely masculine.
