Public statements and recent events indicate that German-American
relations are in the doldrums. Is this only because political actors made
avoidable mistakes and media trumped them up or is a deeper rift between
both nations and peoples developing? What practical means and
options exist to end the confrontation and strengthen German-American
ties – not only among political actors but also in the everyday relations
among its people and cultural institutions that sustain their encounters?
Our projects intends to (a) to emphasize cultural commonalities; (b) to
analyze the origins, causes, and extent of the current estrangement in
German-American relations from different perspectives; and (c) to explore
alternatives and means to mend this relationship on various levels of
interaction. From a comparative perspective the causes, symptoms, and
outcomes of the irritation as well as continuing bonds that characterize the
post-Cold War relations between Germany and the U.S will be explored by
means of two workshops, an international conference and interviews with
selected conference participants.
