DIE SUbVERSIVE KRAFT DER MUSIK
ThE SubvErSivE POWEr OF muSiC
In „Gitáros fiú a régi képtárban“ („Junger Mann spielt Gitarre in der Galerie
Todor dinow in seinem 1967 entstandenen „Izgonen ot raya“ („Vertreibung
Schnittke.
Thanks to its abstract form, music is something which is difficult for the
censors to grasp, yet at the same time it transports with an immediacy the
state of mind of directors who avail of it in their films.
In “Gitáros fiú a régi képtárban” (“Young Man playing the Guitar at the old
Masters Gallery”) by the Hungarian György Kovásznai, a cultural battle between
the new and the old is played out before the viewers’ eyes. doing so,
the film which was produced in 1964 works with various collage techniques.
Using similar heterogeneous means from real and animation films, the
Bulgarian Todor dinow made his film “Izgonen ot raya” (“Banished from
Eden”) in 1967.
one case which represents an exception to the East German dEFA documentaries
was “paul dessau” which was made by Richard Cohn-Vossens in
the same year: The composer and Brecht assistant is shown at work without
any instructive off-screen narrative – rehearsing for an orchestral piece
on the one hand and teaching children on the other. A film from Romania
– a country in which there were very few public expressions of subversion
– is formally related to this. “Georges Georgescu” (1963) by paul Barbenegra
shows the renowned conductor in a concert hall and doing so it avails of
visual experiments from the 1920s.
Finally in the 1967 animation film “Stekljannaja Garmonika” (“Glass Harmonica”)
from the USSR, the spirit of creativity triumphs over greed and
betrayal: A culturally and historically suggestive utopia with music by Alfred
Schnittke.
