GRUSSWORT VON STAATSMINISTERIN pROF. SAbINE VON SCHORLEMER
Leinwandprominenz: Gerard depardieu, Hannah Herzsprung,
WELCOMING ADDRESS FROM STATE MINISTER pROF. SAbINE VON SCHORLEMER
A Warm Welcome to the 24th Edition of Filmfest Dresden
Short and sweet – this is how the unbiased visitor to the short film festival
probably regards the work involved in running the 24th edition of Filmfest
dresden. Yet for that, when measured against a classic roll of 35 mm film, the
festival submissions this year added up to an astonishing length of 816 kilometres,
which for the viewing and selection committee amounted to more
than 40,000 minutes.
Thus, “short” is clearly a question of perspective. And this is
also reflected in other impressive numbers from the 2012
event: Filmfest dresden received exactly 2,222 submissions
from 82 countries this year. As is traditionally the case, short
fiction films accounted for the major share of the entries
at 1,419. These were rounded off with further submissions
of 550 animation films, 137 documentaries and 116 experimental
films, representing the festival’s usual eclectic range
of genres and styles.
In addition to these impressive facts and figures, the constantly
growing audience numbers represent further proof
of Filmfest dresden’s importance. This is also reflected in the
big names to be seen on the silver screen this year: Gerard
depardieu, Hannah Herzsprung, Anna-Maria Mühe and
many more are counted among the stars in this year’s programme. Thus
Filmfest dresden continues to underscore its reputation as a leading light
among Europe’s festivals dedicated to short film.
For this year’s festival especially, the pre-anniversary one so-to-speak, may
I wish all our guests gripping and inspiring short films. And at the same time
I would like to thank the organisers and other people involved in managing
and running the festival for their (literally) untiring efforts and boundless
commitment.
WELCOMING ADDRESS FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTORS
Dear Festival Guests, dear Fans of Short Film,
while our programming, viewing and selection committees, as well as our
numerous programme partners have just spent months dealing with an
abundance of short films, you, our dear festival guests, have had an abstinence
for an unforgivably long 360 days. To make amends for all your waiting,
we are now giving you the opportunity from 17 to 22 April to catch up on
all you have missed in the short film universe.
The festival’s usual diverse range of films is being augmented this year by a
past times dimension. In our “Eastwind” section we are screening six programmes
which are devoted to East European short films from the 1960s.
They reconstruct a cinematography world in a state of upheaval from the
USSR, poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Rumania, Bulgaria and the GdR.
You will also find yourself travelling through time and space in several other
special programmes this year. In the field of animation, the German Institute
for Animated Film (dIAF) is presenting films together with an accompanying
exhibition, “Wandellust – The Art of Clay Animation”. In the short
fiction film area, this year’s retrospectives are among the highlights. one of
them is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Film department at the Tel
Aviv University. A further special programme, “Collapse into now”, is dedicated
to the band R.E.M.
of course we would never be able to serve you up this long-awaited short
film feast without our sponsors’ help and support. May we first thank our
two main sponsors, the Saxon Ministry for Higher Education, Science and
the Arts and the State Capital of dresden. Likewise, we are very grateful for
the support from our main partner AoK pLUS – the health insurance company
for Saxony and Thuringia. And of course we would like to thank all our
other long-term partners and supporters.
All that remains for us to say is: The yearning is at an end. May we wish all of
you starved of short films much pleasure and entertainment now that your
fasting is over.
Your
Karolin Kramheller, Katrin Küchler and Alexandra Schmidt
