teils abstrakt, teils metaphorisch nutzbares Formvokabular. Es bilden sich
herausragende, länderspezifische Schulen heraus. Traditionslinien lassen
In
gebracht („J S Bach – Fantasia g-moll“).
KINEFORMy
CINéFORMS
KINEFORMEN
In animation and experimental films, the artists developed an immense vocabulary
of usable forms that are partly abstract and partly metaphoric. The
results of which was that excellent schools emerged in specific countries.
Lines of tradition can be drawn here from the avant-garde films in the 1920s
and 1930s in which experiments with form use the means of absolute film,
such as in “Kineformy” (“Cinéforms”). In other works, the film language is
brought into harmony with that of the music, as is the case in “J S Bach –
Fantasia g-moll”.
Many of the film artists came from the fine arts or were graduates from film
schools, for the high value of the film medium was something which unified
the East Block countries. Beyond doubt, a master at connecting and varying
the most diverse animations techniques and of meaningful expression
is Stefan Schabenbeck who made “Inwazja” (“Invasion”) and who moved to
the West in 1970. Likewise, not only the joy of experimentation but also pessimism
is revealed in the puppet animation film “Genesis” as well as in the
real films “Rynek” (“The Market”) and “Elégia” (“Elegy”).
one exception is Vlado Kristl. The Zagreb school was dominated by a cartoon-like
style, through which allegorically encoded criticisms were exercised
to a lesser or greater extent. However Kristl literally turned animation
on its head: The framing in his films seems to be borderless as he virtuously
places visual levels, music and narrations in new, confusing interconnections.
It was only after the intervention of the West German oberhausen
festival – the West was an important sales market for East European film
– that it proved possible to complete “don Kihot” (“don Quixote”).
