FRIGO Coldstore Logistics GmbH & Co. KG
commissions new cold-storage facility at
the Port of Hamburg
Whether filled with meat or fish, reefer containers are
arriving from all corners of the globe to supply the FRIGO
cold-storage facility at the freight services centre in
Hamburg-Altenwerder with fresh produce. It was only
just under three years ago that FRIGO Coldstore
Logistics built a cold-storage and office building with
10,000 sqm of warehouse space and an initial 15,000
pallet spaces in two temperature zones based on a new
design concept. 13,000 of the pallet spaces are located
in the zone kept at a temperature range between –22
and –28 degrees, with the remaining 2,000 spaces in
the 0 degree zone. The newly commissioned second
construction stage, which was officially opened in a
ceremony held on 14 February 2008, provides another
8,000 pallet spaces covering a total area of 5,000 sqm.
The facility was built in just one year and is in an
unbeatable location, directly alongside the A7 motorway,
in the centre of the container terminals. To ensure
speedy receiving operations and the smooth distribution
of goods, a total of 18 truck docks are provided.
The expansion became necessary when the number of
container loads to be processed jumped over the last
three years and the first construction stage, commissioned
as recently as 2005, was virtually fully utilised.
On average the facility processes 40 containers, or up
to 50 trucks each day. Whether it be lamb from New
Zealand, steaks from Argentina or pangasius fish fillets
from Vietnam, all refrigerated goods are carefully
handled and kept at the correct temperature by a
total of 40 staff. The entire facility now has a storage
capacity of around 14,000 t of refrigerated goods.
Special attention was paid to saving energy costs as
early as the planning stages of the high-tech coldstorage
facility. From insulation to refrigeration
technology, all construction and equipment measures
contributing to energy savings were utilised. They
include a cooled loading zone as part of an optimised
refrigeration chain, and the use of state-of-the-art air
lock systems to reduce the loss of cold air to minimum
when moving goods in or out of storage. The hybrid
liquefier installed in the refrigeration plant saves
around 15,000 cubic metres of water per year.
A computer-controlled mobile rack system makes for
improved use of space, and a leading-edge, lowconsumption
refrigeration plant with four screw
compressors ensures the correct temperatures.
