Schenker Austria launched its own service on the Krems-Vienna-Hamburg route with the
Donausprinter (Danube Sprinter) container train in October 2007

Mr. Lippstreu, Schenker Austria/SOE
and the Port of Hamburg are linked in
a successful partnership that began
decades ago. How important is the
sea freight business for Schenker,
and how does the Port of Hamburg
rate in your opinion
Klaus Lippstreu: The Port of
Hamburg is the most significant
port for container transhipments,
both imports and exports, for
Austria’s foreign trade in northern
Europe. Even though the southern
ports of Koper and Trieste have
developed strongly in recent years,
Hamburg still retains its status as
the highest-ranking port for
Schenker Austria/SEE, as it has for
many years now. The Austrian sea
freight volume carried by Schenker
for 2007 comes to around 100,000
TEU. A further 100,000 TEU will be
moved in the south-eastern
European region.
Most of the container traffic between
the shipment centres in Austria and
the Port of Hamburg is moved by
environmentally friendly rail. A total of
54 container trains each week link the
container terminals in the Port of Hamburg
with the CT terminals in Austria.
The service providers include TFG,
IMS, ROLAND and ICA. What was the
reason for Schenker to establish its
own train system on this route
Klaus Lippstreu: We set up our
own train system because of the
capacity bottlenecks in moving
cargo from and to the seaports.
With the Donausprinter, we
initially entered the market with
one weekly departure on the
Hamburg – Enns – Vienna –
Enns – Hamburg route.
The carrying capacity on the train
doing this roundtrip is about
90 TEU. In addition to the new
Donausprinter, we continue to
run the container train on the
Salzburg – Hamburg route, which
we started at the beginning of
October 2007. This export train
links the City of Mozart to the Port
of Hamburg with one departure
each week. We are increasingly
relying on our own train systems
so as to be able to offer our
shipping customers a service with
a higher standard of quality. >>>
