Meist sind die Terminkalender von morgens früh bis in den Abend gefüllt und auch am Wochenende und in den Ferien können sie selten ganz „abschalten“. Doch dafür bewegen sie nicht nur ein kleines Rädchen im Getriebe, sondern bringen mit ihren Visionen ihr Unternehmen und damit unsere gesamte Wirtschaft voran. Sie schaffen Arbeitsplätze und bringen innovative Produkte und Dienstleistungen an den Markt. Doch diese berufliche Erfüllung hat einen Preis und der heißt Freizeit. Wenn man Umfragen glaubt, ist dieser Preis vielen jungen Menschen heute zu hoch. Gerade deswegen möchte ich all diejenigen bestärken, die Einfluss nehmen und Karriere machen wollen, und Ihnen sagen: Hamburg braucht Ihre Energie, Ihre Ideen und Ihren Ehrgeiz! Das geht nicht ohne Freiräume, daher ist die richtige Work-Life- Balance enorm wichtig!

Following the tracks of the<br />
Greek Shipping Miracle<br />
A wise man once said: “The secret of business is to know something that nobody<br />
else knows”. Although this statement did not make him the smartest man in the<br />
world, it certainly proved that he had a keen sense for recognizing business opportunities,<br />
making him one of the biggest names in shipping business ever:<br />

Even though Greece today is not known for<br />
its outstanding economy, the MBA Shipping<br />
class of 2013 embarked on a journey to Athens<br />
and Piraeus to discover the secrets of the great<br />
long-lasting success of the Greek shipping community,<br />
which is in command of the world’s largest<br />
merchant fleet in the world.<br />
Visiting a wide range of different shipping companies,<br />
the class had the chance to pick the executives’<br />
brains to gain an insight on their business philosophies<br />
and strategies. The students were mostly impressed<br />
and inspired by the passion and dedication<br />
that especially the family-owned and -run companies<br />
showed towards the shipping profession. Most<br />
of them were active seafarers in the past and learnt<br />
the basics of business from scratch throughout all<br />
operational and administrative departments.<br />
A special experience was the guided tour on the “Hellas<br />
Liberty” in Piraeus, one of more than 2,000 ships<br />
that were contracted in US shipyards at the beginning<br />
of 1942 to support the war efforts. The Liberty<br />
ships were the first ships to be built using production<br />
line methods that resulted in a four-day construction<br />
process for each ship. When the war ended, many<br />
Liberty ships were purchased by Greece to fortify<br />
their merchant fleet that had been decimated by<br />
World War II, and were desperately needed to deliver<br />
food, medicine and supplies during the crucial years<br />
of the Cold War. Today, the “Hellas Liberty” is one of<br />
the last remaining Liberty ships. It was renovated in<br />
a very costly and extensive process, transforming it<br />
into a floating museum to educate the new generation<br />
about the Greek maritime history.<br />
Despite a tightly packed schedule, the group also got<br />
a chance to relax, enjoy the beach, absorb the beauty<br />
of the many local sights and explore a vast array of<br />
culinary treats. Overall, the visit was a great success<br />
and the group is looking forward to the two remaining<br />
field trips to Dubai and London next year.<br />
